Gotta Geaux Les

Well, that sure escalated quickly.

When Les Miles walked out of Jordan-Hare Stadium late Saturday night, I’m sure he didn’t feel too comfortable with his current position of employment. I know I wouldn’t have. I seriously doubt he expected to be loading his resumé onto Monster.com less than 24 hours later.

Normally in these type situations I tend to side almost exclusively with the coach. Usually a team’s fan base has delusions of grandeur and wants their coach fired because they think their program is better than they truly are.

Or, you have an athletic director that has the patience of Hans Gruber and fires his coach without really giving him a legitimate chance to succeed. However, in the case of Les Miles and LSU, things aren’t so cut and dry.

I am not a fan of Miles. I think he’s one of the more overrated coaches in college football whose success can be attributed more to luck than it can coaching ability. I know everyone loved the “Mad Hatter” moniker that followed him around, but I always looked at him more as your loveable younger brother who did crazy things because he didn’t know better.

To be completely honest, and I know I’m not the first person to say this, but I agree with those who thought he should of had a change of address after last season. This is where I think LSU, and Athletic Director Joe Alleva in particular, screwed up.

There was really no logical reason why they brought Miles back after last season, thinking his year would be any different. I know there was some rumblings that the offense would be much improved after their bowl game against Texas Tech, but that’s like saying I’d be a good running backs coach because I had Bo Jackson rush for over 5,000 yards in a season of Super Tecmo Bowl. Scoring on Texas Tech isn’t really anything to get excited about.

So, it really shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone that LSU struggled offensively this year, even though they brought back a majority of their starters on that side of the ball. Alleva should’ve known what to expect coming into the season, and if he didn’t, he should probably be fired and replaced by that lady on Facebook who posts videos of herself talking about the dangers of texting and driving, as she is driving her car.

When Rex Ryan fired his coordinator last week after only two games I thought it looked bad on Rex. If you’re willing to fire someone only a few weeks into the season you didn’t have a lot of faith in that person in the first place, and did your team a disservice by keeping him on to start the season.

The same line of thinking applies to Miles. I don’t have an issue at all the Les is no longer going to be the Tigers head football coach, but the timing just doesn’t look good.

Now LSU goes with Ed Orgeron for the time being and who knows how that will work out. I don’t follow LSU athletics enough to even care who might be their next coach, assuming Orgeron doesn’t light the world on fire. I do know that as long as Alleva is the man in charge he’ll probably make the wrong decision and then follow that up with a comedy of errors afterwards. Maybe he can bring on the Facebook lady in some capacity. It’d be more entertaining than what they’re putting out on the football field.
