We still have some time before the local high school football season will get started, but football is never too far from the mind in our area.

With that in mind, the upcoming season should be a fruitful one for the teams representing us in Glynn County.

Now that the GHSA has reclassified and realigned the regions, our schools are still in the same region, however several schools have been moved, and in Region 2-AAAAA Glynn Academy and Brunswick High are joined by Bradwell Institute, Effingham County, and Richmond Hill.

Yes, that is five schools in the region; with four schools making the playoffs, there should be no doubt that the Pirates and Red Terrors should be playing in the post season.

Where should each team finish within the region? Let’s take a look at this time and see where they stand.

The Glynn Academy Red Terrors schedule is one of the toughest in the state. In fact, the Terrors will not be playing at Glynn County Stadium until the fifth game of the season when they take East Jackson.

Some of the other highlights of the schedule include, Benedictine, while playing in a smaller classification, is a long time sports power. The private school always has athletes available to them.

The Ware County game will be the next installment in what has become the southeast’s best rivalry of late. Last year, these two squads played for the right to go to the Georgia Dome, and of course the Terrors came out on top in an instant classic.

Glynn Academy will then meet Pomona, out of Colorado, but the location will be at Disney World in Orlando.

Camden County is always the measuring stick for teams in our area, and this year will be no different.

The crosstown rivalry against Brunswick very well could decide the top seed for the region. The remaining games on the schedule, other than the Wayne County game, are the rest of the region schedule.

With the schedule being quite difficult, it is very possible that the Glynn Academy record could not be what it was last season, but the team very likely could be more talented than last season’s team.

Heading into the season, the Terrors are the prohibitive favorite to win the region. There is one team that can match up with the red and white, and that is Brunswick High.

The Pirates will come into the season as one of the most talented teams in the southeast.

In particular, the offensive line looks to be as strong as any in recent Brunswick High history. Led by recent Georgia commit, D’Antne Demery the Pirates also have Jabori Williams and Warren McClendon to help plow over opposing defenses.

The Pirates schedule is highlighted with Coffee County, Camden County, and Glynn Academy.

Brunswick High’s region hopes rest on that Glynn game, as well as that being a statement game for the Pirates program.

The closer we get to the season, the more I have the feeling that the Pirates and Coach Larry Harold are in for a breakout season. Every football fan knows that games are won along the line of scrimmage, and the Pirates will likely have the advantage over every team on the schedule in that regard.

It will be up to skill position players like Shawn Smith, Jamarius Stevens, and Shaq Robinson to take over from there.

How do these two teams match up with each other? If one had asked me this question a couple of weeks ago, I would have answered Glynn Academy, no doubt.

However, thinking more about it now, the skill positions are similar. The difference comes along that line of scrimmage.

Brunswick returns those aforementioned players, and Glynn suffered some tough losses to graduation on both sides of the offensive and defensive lines.

I would have to pick the Pirates for the October 14th matchup. However, I do reserve the right to change my mind!
