Swing Your Sword

As I always say it is never too early to talk Pirate Football.

When you follow a program as closely as I have followed the BHS program as a former player and now broadcaster you develop some special bonds with former and current players.

One of those current players that I am really close to is senior LB Kam Futch. Futch is one heck of a football player.

At 6’1 and 220 pounds Futch looks the part also, but better yet he will hit you like sledge hammer and controls the middle of a pretty stout Pirate defense that has 9 starters coming back on defense that allowed under 15 points a game in 2016.

First year Coach Sean Pender says Futch has bought into the new system and is leading by example on the practice field. Futch, Sean Ward, Aubrey Williams, and Sharrod Frazier form arguably the best LB position group in South Georgia. Futch is also a good student and received an offer to play football from West Georgia just this week.

In the recent BHS/GA spring game Futch forced a fumble that set up a BHS touchdown in that contest. Kam Futch is a humble young man. He is soft spoken and is a yes sir, no sir, look you in the eye and a firm handshake young man.

He has qualities you admire and he reaffirms that there is hope for the future when his generation becomes leaders of our society. I have been his prayer group leader for two years now and he always asks great questions about life in general. He seeks to learn and has a passion for the game of football. You can’t fake passion folks. You either have it or you don’t.

To show what kind of respect Futch has around the Pirate football program he was named Team Captain for the 2017 season. Pretty high honor for the senior with 20 varsity starts under his belt. Look for Futch to be all region and be invited to many high school all-star games in the state of Georgia after this season is complete.

Kam is a part of a senior class that consists of 35 players at BHS. These seniors desperately want to turn around this football program. After going 8-12 over the past two seasons, Futch and the rest of his senior class are ready to erase the sting of not making the playoffs for the last two seasons.

When I look at Futch I see the size, strength, speed, and intangibles needed to lead his squad to a possible region championship in 2017 and hopefully a deep playoff run.

The tagline for the 2017 Pirate season is “swing your sword” and if the rest of the Pirates swing their swords like Kam Futch has over his Pirate career then the football program will make a drastic 360 turn in 2017.

I have a feeling that when we look back years from now on the 2017 season the name Kam Futch will be associated with the turnaround of the BHS football program and Kam will be remembered as one of the great linebackers in BHS History.

The sky is the limit for Futch and his Pirate teammates in 2017. Kam Futch is an outstanding young man and it has been a blessing to watch him grow and mature as a young man. Pirate nation your 2017 Team Captain is getting ready to get you back in the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Buy your season tickets and come see this football team and this young man lead his team. Be proud Glynn County of the young men our high school football programs are developing.
