On a beautiful hot and humid day in Adel, the Brunswick High Pirates woke up in the third quarter and raced out to a 34-14 victory over the Cook Hornets.

Report Card: Offense: B+. I needed to see the passing offense get better and it did.

Jamarius Stevens had nice TD passes to Kalvin Godette who turned on the jets to outrun Cook for a 75-yard TD, a nice TD pass to Wiley Golden, and Shawn Smith played like a big time recruit. If this passing game continues to click along with rushing attack this offense can be scary good.

The rushing attack minus Brandon McMaster who coaches held out imposed its will on Cook late in second quarter. Ben McCloud had a nice day running through the middle of the Cook defense.

Nice job by this unit. A fumble by Terrell Carmena kept this unit from getting an A.

Defense: B+. Reggie Jackson played like a grown man in the middle of the DL, and rest of the DL followed suit.

The linebackers played strong and fast and the secondary was much improved from week one.

This unit has made the biggest improvement from 2015. If they continue to improve then a nice playoff run could follow.

A 60 yard TD run kept this grade from being an A+. This group is fast and good.

Special Teams: D. The old kick coverage issue reared its ugly head again as the Pirates gave up a 74 yard kick off return for TD and gave some other return yardage. A forced fumble on a punt return in the 3rd quarter kept this grade from being an F. Improvements are needed and also deeper kicks would help greatly.

Coaching: B+. Would have loved to be a fly on the wall during the halftime talk as the Pirates came out with a 22 point 3rd quarter after trailing at the half. Game plan was great with wearing Cook down with running game and then taking downfield shots with passing game. Slow start kept this from being an A.

Overall: B. Good solid performance. Pirates beat a 3a playoff team by 20 on the road. A win is a win.

Final Thoughts: When Brandon McMaster returns from the ankle injury this team should fly high for the rest of 2016.

This is a good football team. I try not to look ahead but the City Championship game has the makings of a classic, but that is in October. A lot of football to play before then.

The Cook visitor press box was like an oven and after the game I felt like a well done pot roast.

Nick Chubb is back and is a beast BTW. I raced home to watch every one of those 222 yards and luckily did not receive a speeding ticket.

Nothing better than fall football season. Pirates and Dawgs win on same day. Life is good.
