Several weeks ago Brunswick High School and Glynn Academy renewed an old tradition of having an annual spring football game as the Pirates beat the Terrors 21-12 in the varsity portion of the contest. Both squads had 9 days of practice to prepare for the contest.

Below is my report card for each team and we’ll start with the 3 time defending City Champion Glynn Academy Red Terrors:

Offensive grade: B+. Glynn needed to work on developing an offensive line during the spring. Randon Jernigan is a proven commodity at QB so do not put much stock in the interception he threw to Jaylen Jackson for BHS. He will kill you with his feet or with his arm come fall. He is in transition from throwing the baseball to throwing the football as the Terrors had a good playoff run that ended right when spring practice began.

Hunter Hall looked very good running the football between the tackles. I think Glynn made some very good strides on the OL as they found nice chunks of yardage against the best defense they will face during region play this fall.

When Glynn got settled in and decided to run the football with an extra running back and TE they were very successful on offense. This offense is going to pound people into submission come the fall. The passing game will come around trust me.

Defensive grade: C-. Coach Rock’s defense will be a strong suit come fall. The front seven was solid, but too many Pirate receivers were running open in the back end of the secondary. That will get cleaned up during the summer.

Expect this unit to dominate during the season. Hunter Hall will be a force in his senior year at LB or anywhere he lines up.

Coaching grade: A. The Terrors are a well-coached confident football team. Nothing rattles this staff and the players play with confidence. That wins a lot of football games. Keep in mind that GA’s practice fields are undergoing renovations and the Terrors had no goal posts during the spring which explains why Glynn went for two point conversions after TD’s.

Brunswick High:

Offensive grade: A+. How could it have gone any better? The Pirates ran their base offense only and had two long TD passes of over 40 yards.

Jamarius Stevens has some great arm talent and was the spring game MVP with three TD passes. The offense was in the red zone as time expired.

Coach Pender is an offensive genius that creates mismatches with his play calling.

Alonzo Brown who was never used in 2016 has stepped up as a big time option for the fall in the passing game. A running back must step up for the fall but keep in mind Pender has been only been on the job since February 1st and only had nine days of spring practice.

Defensive grade: C. Jaylen Jackson had a nice interception that set up a Pirate TD. The blueprint to beat BHS over the past couple of years has been to run right at the Pirates. Glynn did exactly that and had two long TD drives. That must get cleaned up during the summer, and it will under new management on Altama Avenue.

Coaching grade: A. The Pirates played with confidence and that is a reflection of Sean Pender. New staff is coming together and to come out against top 10 team in the state and win speaks volumes.

Final thoughts are the October game will be for the region championship. These are two good football teams’ folks. Buy your season tickets now.
