McIntosh County Academy Hires New Coach

Not even one year ago, the McIntosh County Buccaneers were in the third quarter of a state title game in Atlanta; poised to score the go-ahead touchdown.
However, that was not meant to be as a fumble derailed that opportunity and then the floodgates opened in the fourth. Macon County sent the Buccaneers home with the runner-up trophy.
Much has changed in the span of four months. The Bucs will go into the 2018 campaign with a new Head Coach and Athletic Director.
Let’s start at the beginning. The decision was made to bring back former head coach Robby Robinson to be the Head Coach as the football program had slid a long way from where it had been when Robinson ran the show previously.
This time Robinson would not only shoulder the head coaching job but also the title of Athletic Director.
During Robinson’s tenure, there were more than a few hiccups; a dispute with the high school principal which resulted in that principal being re-assigned, a question about fund appropriation among the sports and of course the charges brought against the former MCA head man.
Allegedly, Robinson instructed one of his football players to hit a defenseless player during practice and an investigation was launched.
Eventually, Robinson was indicted on 2 misdemeanors and 1 felony. The 2 misdemeanors were Reckless Conduct and Hazing; the felony was 2nd Degree Cruelty to Children.
The McIntosh Board of Education initially suspended Robinson until it had a chance to discuss the matter further. Once that occurred, the board asked for Robinson’s resignation.
This left the Bucs without a Head Coach and Athletic Director well past the hiring season for high school football coaches.
The MCA Board of Education elected not to conduct a new coach search and instead promoted Defensive Coordinator Terel Toomer to Head Coach and promoted McIntosh County Middle School principal, Scott Brooker to Athletic Director.
Toomer is a good hire given the situation as he is well respected in the community and well-liked by the players.
