Glynn Academy’s Season Opener

The football season in Glynn County began with a resounding thud, as Glynn Academy fell to Benedictine 33-8.

What was expected to be a heavyweight fight became more of a “Who can put the ball on the ground more?”.

From the start Glynn’s offense was stifled. The quick option game, which is the Terror’s bread and butter, netted negative yards for the game. Those same plays also put the ball on the ground three times, including one that was returned for the Benedictine’s opening score.

Quarterback Randon Jernigan was about as nonexistent as someone who touches the ball every play can be. His best moments were when he could flash his athleticism while running for his life.

The Terrors threw the ball less than ten times, and when they did Jernigan never seemed comfortable. His one foray down field, a duck towards tight end Andrew Delany, was picked by Benedictine’s safety over the top.

The only spark from the offense came in the form of linebacker/fullback Hunter Hall, but when a guy plays every snap on defense it’s tough not to get gassed. The do-it-all back was able to gash BC up the gut, but never consistently enough to matter.

Glynn’s defense held their own. Don’t let the scoreboard fool you, these guys held their own. Constantly being on the field, and consistently starting on your half of the 50 is never a good recipe for a defense.

Especially, against an offense that went undefeated last year and returned their quarterback along with a great supporting class. The defense did everything they could, including an interception and recovering multiple fumbles, but it seemed like every time they got off the field they were right back on.

So, what can we take away from this game? It’s simple, BC’s great and Glynn is hurt. Benedictine is on the verge of becoming a dynasty. The team is 36-1 in its last 37 games and shows no signs of slowing down.

On the other side, Glynn entered this game like a MASH unit. As many as 10 players who were slotted to play were held out and many guys who did play did so on nagging injuries. Jernigan, who has had shoulder issues walked off the field gingerly throughout the night.

Don’t read too much into this game. It wasn’t a region game for Glynn and they played it very close to the vest. Survive with no injuries and get into region play.

Next week is a different story. The Gators of Ware County come to town off a playoff run last year. This game is a huge rivalry game.

The Gators finished 8-4 last year, including 4-0 in their region. Head Coach Franklin Stephens will lead his team into their season opener in Glynn.

Rocky Hidalgo is still on the sidelines for Glynn. The man that has lead the Terrors to the playoffs in three straight years. This team won’t lose faith, remember last year started exactly the same. Expect Glynn to get healthier, and buckle up their chin straps as they look to get back on track going into the meat of this season.
