Earlier in the month new Brunswick High Football coach Sean Pender spoke to a packed house of Pirate supporters at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Glynn.

It was a meet and greet event where Pender got to meet the Pirate fan base for the first time since his hiring.

The BHS Varsity Cheerleaders got the event off to a rousing start as they jacked up the crowd in attendance. Afterwards, Athletic Director Steve Waters Introduced Pender to a packed house of about 130 supporters.

Pender opened up the discussion by saying he came to BHS to win a State Title and that is the first thing he told the returning players when he met with them in late January after his hiring was announced.

Coach Pender spoke with a lot of passion about his goals with the BHS program. He spoke about academic tracking and progress for his players and his plans to get kids prepared for college. He spoke about the academic standing of his football team he left in Pierce County where he had over 30 kids with a 3.5 GPA in core subjects.

Pender talked about his strength and conditioning program which will concentrate on working the core areas of the body. He talked about how the kids must get in top physical shape to run the offensive system he wants to run on Altama Avenue.

In Pender’s offense, he wants to run 80-90 plays on offense and to accomplish that you must snap the football every 9 to 12 seconds.

Pender spoke about the role of the community in building support for the program he envisions at BHS. Pender spoke about unity and embracing the traditions of BHS and bringing in influential people associated with the program’s past as ambassadors to bring everyone together.

Pender spoke with parents on the process it takes to get their children recruited by college football programs, and notified them of an event he scheduled on Valentine’s Day for parents and supporters to come in and learn about the process.

Pender talked about having higher goals than just beating Glynn Academy and winning a City Championship. He said if that is your number one goal than we are not aiming high enough.

He said he wanted to look at each team we play as faceless and expects the maximum amount of effort out of each player on Friday night.

Pender introduced his family and his coaching staff, and opened up the floor for questions from the crowd assembled. One question was about his offense in which Pender replied we have led the state in total offense for all classifications for 3-4 years in a row. He then said what do you think we are going to do with the talent we have in place in Brunswick?

He talked about the defensive talent he inherited saying we have some players on defense who are great athletes. He talked about the spring game with Glynn Academy on May 19th. Pender said step one is to teach his coaches left over from previous staff the system then the coaches would teach the kids the system.

Pender said that he had to evaluate a lot of players in the spring and the game plan for spring game would be very vanilla with a lot of substitutions.

One alumni asked who they could make their check out to. The event wrapped up with Pender leading the Pirate Nation through a cheer.

1-2-3 Team 4-5-6 Family. Great event, and a great time to be a Pirate. Things are starting to get exciting on the Northside of town. AIR-RAID is just on the horizon.
