Dawgs Have Bite

There is a lot of buzz around the Georgia Bulldogs right now and they have earned every bit of the attention.
Georgia fans knew that this team could be good but did they think this good? Georgia is undefeated, only 8 other teams in the power 5 conferences can say that.
The season has had a little adversity but Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs have not missed a step. The Dawgs saw their number one quarterback go down and their freshman quarterback come in and lead the team just a good, if not better.
So far this season, the Notre Dame game has been the only nail biter. The Dawgs walked out of South Bend with a 20-19 victory.
The rest of the games have been won convincingly. Georgia’s 4 SEC games so far have been blowouts. They have combined outscored those opponents 170 to 45. Georgia’s defense has been smothering, and their offense has been impressive as well.
Defensively, Mel Tucker’s defense has been playing lights out. It seems like Coach Tucker has got his guys to fit his scheme and they are playing great.
Lorenzo Carter has been a pain in offenses butt this season. He leads the Bulldogs in sacks with 3 and has 22 tackles so far this season.
His decision to come back has paid off and he will more than likely be a first round pick in this year’s NFL draft.
Roquan Smith and J.R. Reed have also done a great job making things difficult for offenses. Smith might be the best linebacker in college football. He is able to get sideline to sideline and he is very physical once he gets there.
UGA got a blessing when Reed transferred to Athens. He is all over the field for the Bulldogs. He is second in tackles, and has recorded a sack, interception, blocked field goal, and several tackles for losses.
Offensively, Nick Chubb is balling. Georgia fans should send Paul Johnson and the rest of the Yellow Jackets a thank you note for beating UGA in Athens and tearing up the hedges. I am not so sure Chubb would be in red and black if they would not have happened last year.
Chubb has been dominant this year. He is leading the SEC in rushing with a total of 688 yards rushing.
Jake Fromm has also done a great job this year. Just last year this time he was playing high school football and now he is leading the number 2 team in the nation. So far, the stage has not been too big.
The play calling has helped him manage the game effectively. Not too much is asked of him and he is doing a great job doing his job. The offensive line has also made his job easier.
Last year, the UGA offensive line was horrendous. It was thought to be similar this year as well, but it has not been. The offensive line has helped pave the way for the number 1 rusher in the SEC. Coach Pittman’s offensive line will only get better as time goes on.
UGA is in a good spot at this point in the season. Up to this point, they have handled who has been on their schedule. This bye week has come at a great time for the Dawgs. Next week starts the meat of their schedule. The first stop is in Jacksonville against the Florida Gators.
I expect UGA to win this game but it is a rivalry game so you never really know. Then the Dawgs face off against South Carolina, Auburn, Kentucky, and then Georgia Tech.
I expect UGA to win the rest of these games and then meet up in Atlanta against Alabama.
This season could be a special one for Georgia. It is important for the Bulldogs to remember that they are being hunted now and they will get every team’s best for the rest of the season. This should be a fun ride the rest of the way.
Knights Gallop Into Playoffs

The Frederica Knights got a much needed bye week this week before round 1 of the playoffs start next week.
Last week, the Knights lost their last region game of season against Edmund Burke. This could be a blessing in disguise for Brandon Derrick’s Knights.
There is no doubt that Frederica has one of the most talented teams in GISA. Sometimes it takes losing a game you are not expected to lose to bring out a team’s full potential.
The Knights have had a great week of practice while preparing for their first round matchup at home next Friday. They have prepared for two teams this week, but they will know their first round opponent some time on Saturday.
Their first round matchup will be against Tiftarea or Southland. The Knights got their first ever AAA win against Tiftarea 3 years ago.
Tiftarea is a strong and physical team that is led by a physical running back. Southland is also a well coached and physical team.
Regardless of who steps on the field, Frederica’s first round matchup will be a physical one. The Knights have been tested though. If you ask Coach Brandon Derrick he will tell you that he scheduled Parklane Academy and Wesleyan to prepare his team for this very moment.
Frederica will go into the playoffs with a 5-3 record. Looking back on the season, The Knights have still not played their best football yet.
Their 3 losses could have easily been wins. Early turnovers against Parklane Academy cost them there. The same can be said for the Wesleyan game. Their 3rd loss could be attributed to simply turning it “ON” a little too late. These losses should and will help keep the Knights motivated for the playoffs.
The offense of the Knights this season has been impressive at times. It has averaged over 300 yards a game this season. Over 200 of the yards have come on the ground.
Jaylin Simpson and Isaiah Jackson have helped lead the Knights in that category. Simpson has rushed for over 600 (passed for over 650) and Jackson has rushed for over 500.
Michael Tindle and the rest of the offensive line has done an amazing job helping lead the Knights rushing attack. They have done a great job under first year offensive line coach, Bill Stafford.
The Knights defense has played well this regular season too. Harry Veal has been the anchor for the defense. Veal leads the team with over 60 tackles on the season. I do not think there is a more physical linebacker than Veal in Southeast Georgia.
Deke Jernigan has also done a great job playing linebacker. He and Veal have been a difficult duo to manage for offenses, Cameron Gardner, Rett Thompson, Cole Hinson, Trace Dorminy, and Tyler Pierce have done a great job on the defensive front on the season.
After the rough start at Parklane, they really zoned in and helped make things difficult in the trenches.
The secondary also played well. Jaylin Simpson, JT Elliott, Avery Cobb, Jackson Wetzler, Isaiah Jackson, Santana Clark, Eric Tatum, and Jashawn Sheffield have done a great job making it difficult for team to hurt the Knights over the top.
Frederica’s defense has forced over 20 turnovers on the season. Defensive Coordinator, Ben Burkett, hopes to add to that total when the playoffs start.
October 27th is win or go home. There are no more guaranteed games.
The next time the senior Knights touch the field could be their last. Brandon Derrick told his team at the beginning of the season that the goal was to be standing at Mercer University on November 17th holding the state championship trophy. Now is the time to make that goal a reality.
Knights Need Help

The Knights traveled to Edmund Burke Academy to attempt to wrap up its second consecutive region championship.
Coming off of a tough and emotional win against Bulloch Academy last week, Frederica turned their focus to a determined EBA team. The Knights beat EBA 34-7 last year, but this is not the same EBA team from last year and Coach Derrick stressed that to his team throughout the week.
Frederica would start off slow this week just as they did last week against Bulloch.
Frederica’s offense saw their first two drives end in punts. John Mitchell Brock did an excellent job helping flip the field position for the Knights.
Early on, Frederica’s defense struggled with the option offense of Edmund Burke. It’s all about eye discipline and assignment football when facing an offense like this. Edmund Burke was able to find success early on running the ball.
Frederica was finally able to move the ball on their 3rd drive. It started with a long pass from Jaylin Simpson to Jashawn Sheffield to the 4-yard line. Rett Thompson was able to punch it in from there.
A botched snap on the extra point attempt made the score 7-6, EBA. EBA would tack on one more score before the half. Their QB was able to break outside containment and make some nifty moves to score. At the half the score was 14-6, EBA.
The second half started off a little rocky for Frederica. The opening second half kickoff was a pooch kick that ended up in the hands of an EBA defender.
The Spartans scored on their next drive making the score 21-6. The Knights were able to tack on two more scores.
Jaylin Simpson connected with Jashawn Sheffield for a long touchdown, and then Jaylin Simpson scored the next touchdown but the Knights failed to convert the two point conversion.
Frederica got the ball back one more time with 4 seconds left in the game. Jaylin’s pass came up short and the Knights dropped their first region game of the season, 21-19.
Frederica will now play the waiting game for second consecutive year. Last year, the Knights needed Pinewood to help them win the region championship.
This year it will be the Trinity Christian Crusaders. If the Crusaders beat the Spartans, the Knights will be the region champs. If EBA wins, the Knights will be the number 2 seed going into the playoffs.
Frederica will have their work cut out for them in round 1. Their first-round matchup will not be like the first-round matchup of last year.
No matter the seeding, the Knights will face a pretty good opponent in the first round. Coach Derrick’s message to his team was a simple one. “Prepare each week like you’re the Alabama Crimson Tide. We are going to get everyone’s best shot.”
The Knights must take advantage of the bye week next week. The injured and the sick get a week to heal up. The Frederica will also have a week to work on the small things before their first-round matchup.
Frederica finished the regular season 5-3. Two of those losses coming against (out of conference) Parklane Academy and Wesleyan School. The Knights have been tested this year. Now it is time to see if those tests will pay off in the playoffs.
Frederica Outduels Bulloch Academy

The Knights have had this game circled for a while.
If you think back to last year, this is the team who gave the Knights their only region loss. This loss came on a Wednesday night while they were preparing to evacuate St. Simons Island because of Hurricane Matthew.
Knights Lance Pinewood

The Knights traveled to Bellville, Ga to take on the Pinewood Patriots.
This is traditionally a huge game between the two teams. Last year’s Frederica won the matchup 30-17. Two years ago, Pinewood came away with the victory with a score of 41-6.
This was one of Brandon Derricks worst losses at Frederica. Coach Derrick challenged his team before the game by telling that he had never won on this field and that this game would be a statement game for GISA.
Knights Knock Off Trinity

It had been a total of 20 days since the Knights last took the field in Atlanta against powerhouse Wesleyan.
The Knights went into unfamiliar territory against Wesleyan but played hard the entire game. Turnovers cost the Knights in that game and that would be the last game they would play for a while because Hurricane Irma would put a halt on the Knights’ season.
When the Frederica Knights evacuated their campus, they did not know what they would come back to. Nor when they would be allowed to be back on campus.
Just last year the Knights were in this same position when Hurricane Matthew decided to wreak havoc on St. Simons Island. This year, Hurricane Irma would cause the Knights to cancel their games against Valwood and Memorial Day School.
Luckily, this year Frederica Academy only suffered minor damage. A bent goal post and a few missing lights would be all the damage dished out from Irma. Frederica got back to some normalcy when they resumed practice on Monday
Brandon Derrick’s Knights started out fast against the Trinity Christian Crusaders. The defense came out and forced a punt. The Knights ensuing drive stalled as well, but the Knights got a great punt from John Mitchell Brock and pinned the Crusaders inside the 5.
The Frederica defense, led by stud linebacker Harry Veal, made another great stand and forced a punt.
The first score of the game for the Knights came with a Jaylin Simpson scamper into the endzone. The next offensive possession saw Jaylin Simpson connecting with Jashawn Sheffield for a big pass down the center of the field. The Knights finished the half with scores from Isaiah Jackson and a huge catch from Harry Veal from Jaylin Simpson.
Frederica went in at halftime up 21 points and with over 200 yards of offense. The defense held the Crusaders to only 53 yards of offense.
Coach Derrick’s and Burkett’s goal defensively this week was to stuff the run and they did a great job in the first half doing that. The Crusaders struggled to find running lanes in their Wing-T offense.
Offensively, Coach Derrick’s goal was to be efficient and move the ball down the field to score and score often. They were able to do that in the first half.
The long 20 day break without playing a game seemed to show in the second half. Frederica struggled on offense to start the half.
Jaylin Simpson fumbled on the first offense possession in the second half. That fumble led to the Crusaders first score as they scooped and scored.
The Knights got another big play on defense from Avery Cobb. Cobb intercepted a pass from Trinity’s quarterback and sprinted through the Crusaders defenders for a pick 6.
After this spectacular play, the Knights struggled to stop the passing game of the Crusaders. Trinity Christian amassed 250 yards of offense in the 4th quarter but this was not enough to beat the Knights.
Isaiah finished the night with 188 yards rushing and Simpson had 196 all-purpose yards.
Harry Veal played lights out on defense. Veal is one of the best linebackers in Southeast Georgia and he showed that on Friday.
The offensive and defensive lines also played great on the night. The offensive line helped pave the way for almost 300 yards of rushing offence. The defensive line did a great job stuffing the run and pressuring the quarterback as well.
Next week the Knights will travel to play Pinewood. The winner of the Frederica versus Pinewood game traditionally goes on to win the region. The Knights look to go 2-0 next week.
Frederica Academy Knights Destroys Bethesda

The Frederica Knights traveled to Savannah to take on Bethesda Day School and brought a lot of the rain they had on St. Simons this week with them.
Frederica got off the bus and only had the pleasure of staying dry for about 10 minutes. The rest of the night they would be saturated with water.
The Knights started off very fast. The first play of the game saw Jaylin Simpson sprinting up the sideline on a quarterback zone read.
The next play was not as positive. Jaylin Simpson tried connected with Santana Clark in the end zone for a long pass but was intercepted by the Bethesda defender. The ensuing defensive play the Knights registered a safety by defensive tackle Cole Hinson. This would be the last play for 45 minutes due to a lighting delay.
When play resumed the Knights’ offense dominated. The Knights scored quickly out of the break with Jaylin Simpson connecting with Santana Clark on a screen pass. The rain did not seem to slow the Knights down on the night.
Jaylin Simpson scored on an 80-yard touchdown run to keep the scoring going. Trace Dorminy got in on the quarterback rushing touchdowns as well by scoring on a quarterback keeper. Trace also found sophomore, Avery Cobb for a touchdown.
Isaiah Jackson did a great job running the ball is well. His field vision allows him to make every run an opportunity for 6. Jackson found pay dirt as well on the night.
Senior Rett Thompson ran the ball hard viscously on the night. Thompson found the end zone twice on the night. He had a rushing touchdown and also a kick return for a touchdown as well. The Knights went on to score 49 straight points. There were a lot of freshmen that got to see action on the night. This will pay off as the season progresses.
The Frederica defense was lights out. Led by Harry Veal, the Knights forced several turnovers on the night.
Harry Veal is may be one of the best linebackers in Glynn County this year. He could be one of those guys we watch on Saturdays.
There were a few highlights plays on defense. Hard hits by Deke Jernigan, Tyler Pierce, Josh Meadows, Matthew Hagstrom, and others and also an interception and big return by Santana Clark.
The biggest play on defense came from junior defensive back, Jackson Wetzler. Wetzler broke on a bubble screen from his cornerback position and intercepted the ball and returned it 50 yards for the pick 6. This was indeed the defensive play of the night.
Frederica’s youngsters did a great job as well. William Brock, Eli Fritchman, Kyle Perez, Josh Elliot, and Will Counts all made excellent defensive plays on the night.
The Knights finished off Bethesda 62-12. Head Coach Brandon Derrick addressed his team at the end of the game. He praised his team for coming in, battling the conditions and dominating the game the way they did.
Frederica has a huge game next week. This week will be a GISA versus GHSA battle in Atlanta against Wesleyan. FA will face a very talented and disciplined team that has a few division 1 players.
This is will be a test but Coach Derrick knew that when Wesleyan was scheduled. Coach Derrick’s favorite message to his team is, “In the words of Ric Flair, if you want to be the man you have to beat the man.”
The Knights will step into the ring next week to take on the man and they hope to make some noise in Atlanta.
Knights Early Journey

After two weeks, Brandon Derrick’s Knights are 1-1.
Their first game was in Montgomery, Alabama against Parklane Academy of Mississippi.
On top of first game jitters, the Knights faced extreme heat and a very big and talented Parklane team. The Knights kicked off at 230 central time. The on field temperature had to be close to 110 degrees. The Knights started off very sloppy.

Tyson Summers had a really interesting 1st season at Georgia Southern.
He saw his team finish the season 5-7 and received a lot a backlash from fans. Tom Kleinlein, Georgia Sothern’s AD, even drafted a letter of support for Coach Summers.
There were a lot of changes at GSU last year. The Wing-T offense, that we were used to seeing at GSU, was put aside for more of a spread offense. That experiment didn’t last a year.
