When the Terrors took the field Friday night in Jesup, it had been four weeks to the day since they walked off the field after being trounced by Tift County.
In those 28 days lie a hurricane whose effects are still felt around the county, irreparable damage done to families, 16 grueling hot practices, and a lot of determination.

Jake From State Fromm

JakeFromStateFromm. That is the Twitter handle of the Georgia QB, Jake Fromm. It is for certain his Twitter followers have sky rocketed over the last month, especially in Dawg Nation.
Fromm, a graduate from Houston County, was one of the most feared QB’s in the state of Georgia when in high school.
In fact, most thought he would not sign with UGA since Jacob Eason was already cemented as the starter for Georgia. However, Fromm did commit and instantaneously gave the Dawgs some much needed depth at the QB position.
Coach Kirby Smart had the luxury of another 5-star QB on the roster, just in case something were to happen to Eason.

Falcons 3-0 Start A Mirage?

There were a lot of similarities between last year’s Falcons team and the Panthers team from the year before.
Both were NFC South teams that started the season off as afterthoughts when it came to Super Bowl contenders, yet wound up playing in the title game. Both had high octane offenses, led by MVP winning quarterbacks, maximizing the potential fans had been yearning to see.
So, after the Panthers took a nose dive last season, it was almost in the cards for the Falcons to follow suit. If last season was Atlanta’s version of “The Wall”, you couldn’t blame fans for wondering if this would be “The Final Cut.”
Funny thing about sports, and I imagine it’s one of the reasons you enjoy it, is even when things work out almost exactly as you expect them to, the outcome somehow winds up to be completely different.
Braves Season Wrap Up

Like any losing team, the Atlanta Braves had an overabundance of disappointments during 2017.
Especially given that a few years back, 2017 and the opening of the new stadium was pegged to be the year that the then-rebuilding Bravos would begin to compete again.
As 2017 inched closer, those paying attention knew that wasn’t going to be the case but with 2016 ending on a high note with an offense firing on all cylinders there was potentially plenty to look forward to. So as the season wraps up this week, let’s look at a few positives and negatives from the season.

Knights Knock Off Trinity

It had been a total of 20 days since the Knights last took the field in Atlanta against powerhouse Wesleyan.
The Knights went into unfamiliar territory against Wesleyan but played hard the entire game. Turnovers cost the Knights in that game and that would be the last game they would play for a while because Hurricane Irma would put a halt on the Knights’ season.
When the Frederica Knights evacuated their campus, they did not know what they would come back to. Nor when they would be allowed to be back on campus.
Just last year the Knights were in this same position when Hurricane Matthew decided to wreak havoc on St. Simons Island. This year, Hurricane Irma would cause the Knights to cancel their games against Valwood and Memorial Day School.
Luckily, this year Frederica Academy only suffered minor damage. A bent goal post and a few missing lights would be all the damage dished out from Irma. Frederica got back to some normalcy when they resumed practice on Monday
Brandon Derrick’s Knights started out fast against the Trinity Christian Crusaders. The defense came out and forced a punt. The Knights ensuing drive stalled as well, but the Knights got a great punt from John Mitchell Brock and pinned the Crusaders inside the 5.
The Frederica defense, led by stud linebacker Harry Veal, made another great stand and forced a punt.
The first score of the game for the Knights came with a Jaylin Simpson scamper into the endzone. The next offensive possession saw Jaylin Simpson connecting with Jashawn Sheffield for a big pass down the center of the field. The Knights finished the half with scores from Isaiah Jackson and a huge catch from Harry Veal from Jaylin Simpson.
Frederica went in at halftime up 21 points and with over 200 yards of offense. The defense held the Crusaders to only 53 yards of offense.
Coach Derrick’s and Burkett’s goal defensively this week was to stuff the run and they did a great job in the first half doing that. The Crusaders struggled to find running lanes in their Wing-T offense.
Offensively, Coach Derrick’s goal was to be efficient and move the ball down the field to score and score often. They were able to do that in the first half.
The long 20 day break without playing a game seemed to show in the second half. Frederica struggled on offense to start the half.
Jaylin Simpson fumbled on the first offense possession in the second half. That fumble led to the Crusaders first score as they scooped and scored.
The Knights got another big play on defense from Avery Cobb. Cobb intercepted a pass from Trinity’s quarterback and sprinted through the Crusaders defenders for a pick 6.
After this spectacular play, the Knights struggled to stop the passing game of the Crusaders. Trinity Christian amassed 250 yards of offense in the 4th quarter but this was not enough to beat the Knights.
Isaiah finished the night with 188 yards rushing and Simpson had 196 all-purpose yards.
Harry Veal played lights out on defense. Veal is one of the best linebackers in Southeast Georgia and he showed that on Friday.
The offensive and defensive lines also played great on the night. The offensive line helped pave the way for almost 300 yards of rushing offence. The defensive line did a great job stuffing the run and pressuring the quarterback as well.
Next week the Knights will travel to play Pinewood. The winner of the Frederica versus Pinewood game traditionally goes on to win the region. The Knights look to go 2-0 next week.
Pirates Sink South Effingham

Something unexpected happened to the Brunswick High Pirates last night at Glynn County Stadium a Friday night kick-off. The 2017 All Weather Pirates played on a beautiful Friday night and routed the South Effingham Mustangs 44-13.
The Pirates jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead and never looked back.
Pirate Report Card:
Special Teams: B+. Dalton Thrift gets better every week. His 34-yard field goal at the halftime buzzer is something that BHS may need come playoff time.
Kick coverage has been solid all year. Only thing that kept this grade from being an A was a botched extra point attempt in the 3rd quarter. This area is much improved from 2016 where the kick-off coverage was terrible. Brunswick need this unit in a big game down the road.
Defense: A. This unit was solid all night long.
Jaylen King had a nice game. George Mincey continued his all-region play. Sean Ward and Kam Futch flew around all night long.
The coaching staff worked on some new blitz packages and caused a lot of issues for the Mustangs.
This unit is fast and causes problems for opposing teams with speed. BHS played some reserves in second half and gave up a few yards with a running clock in 4th quarter. It was the second straight game where this unit did not give up a first half point.
Offense: B+. Other than the pick 6 on a screen pass deep in Pirate territory, this unit did pretty much what they wanted to do all night long. The offensive line of Ty Hinson, TJ Kirkland, Brett Hall, John Cano, and Warren McClendon blew holes in the Mustang corral all night long.
It was also the Jamarius Stevens show on offense. The senior QB was 15-for-23, throwing for 244 yards and 3 touchdowns.
The senior also led the Pirates in rushing, rushing the rock 10 times for 118 yards and 3 touchdowns. Alonzo Brown had another 100-yard receiving day; his 4th in a row.
This unit worked on game plan type plays and did not take a real deep shot in passing game all night long.
Coaching: A. The game plan was solid with future games in mind and worked on consistently driving the football down field without going for quick strikes. No let down from the drought ending Camden win.
Overall: A-. Nice solid win over a team that you should beat 10 out of 10 times you play. The Pirates came out and took care of business.
Brunswick will have a bye week next week, then the undefeated Bradwell Tigers roll between the bricks on October 6th for region opener. The Pirates stand at 3-1 on the season.
