It is never too early to talk UGA football. Here is a look at the Dawgs’ schedule from worst to best in 2018.
12. Austin Peay: The Governors roll into Athens on September 1st and roll out about three hours later with a beat down and big fat paycheck.
11. UMass: The Minutemen arrive in Athens in mid-November and will get hammered within minutes.
10. Middle Tennessee State: The Blue Raiders come to Athens in mid-September and depending on the outcome in Columbia, South Carolina the previous week will determine how badly they get pummeled.
9. Vanderbilt: Vandy won the last time they came to Athens in 2016, but that will not happen in 2018. Vandy will be scrappy but in the end get beat something like 41-17.
8. Tennessee: The Vols come to Athens where they won with a Hail Mary in 2016. Butch Jones left a huge mess in Knoxville and Jeremy Pruitt is there to clean it up. It may take 2-3 years to get the Vols back in contention if they give Pruitt enough time in Knoxville to do it. 41-0 at home last season really eats at the Vol nation.
7. Georgia Tech: The Jackets have won the last two times they have visited the Classic City, but that will not happen in 2018. UGA is too deep and talented for Tech in 2018. Did you ever think Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate would land here?
6. Missouri: The Dawgs travel to COMO on 9/22 with a young secondary and will face a Tiger team with Drew Lock, who throws the deep ball better than anyone in the country. Dawgs better be ready for this one. This game worries me.
5. Kentucky: Georgia travels to Lexington on 11/3 and I already know it will be a night game even before it is announced. This is sandwich game between Florida and Auburn and UGA better be ready. A loss to Kentucky would be disaster for UGA because UGA just flat out owns Kentucky in football.
4. LSU: A trip to Red Stick is never easy. The Dawgs will be coming off a Vandy win and LSU will be in the third leg of a four-game stretch with three of the Tigers biggest rivals. Ole Miss, @ Florida, UGA and then Mississippi State, who beat LSU 37-7 in Starkville in 2017.
UGA is catching the Tigers at a good time, but it will still be a toss-up game. Who will LSU’s QB be?
3. South Carolina: This game has been moved back to early September and let me go ahead and warn you that this will be a war.
Columbia, South Carolina may be the hottest place on the planet early in football season. This will be a great game to attend because the sights around Williams Brice stadium will be easy on the eyes because Carolina girls are sweet southern pearls just as the song says. Will Muschamp is building quietly a quality program in Columbia.
2. Florida @ Jax: With Dan Mullen arriving in Gainesville, promising a better offense and a more heated rivalry after saying of the Bulldogs winning the East in 2017, “Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.” As Granny Hawkins said in Outlaw Josey Wales that big talk’s worth doodly-squat Dan.
This game will be more heated than in the past with 4th place Dan running things in Gainesville. 42-7 in 2017 could have been 63-7 it was that one-sided. I Have never seen a Florida team lay down like that Gator squad did that day.
1. Auburn: The DSOR (Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry) was played twice in 2017 with UGA winning the SEC Title 28-7 over AU. This game has all of a sudden become very heated with UGA taking 10 of the last 13 contests. This one in Athens on November 10th should be a classic.
UGA’s conference schedule is tough with trips to LSU, Missouri, Kentucky, South Carolina, and UF in Jax.
Dawgs need to win four of the five contests to get back to Atlanta and play for another SEC Title. Hey Bama, see you in Atlanta.
Tee It Up

If you are a diehard sports fan then you know with Father’s Day approaching next week that it is US Open time as the tournament always concludes on that special day for dads.
The 118th edition returns to Shinnecock Hills for the 5th time. Shinnecock Hills claims to be the oldest formal organized golf club in the United States (1891), to have the oldest golf clubhouse in the U.S. (1892) and to have been the first to admit women, which it did from the start. It is a links course just east of New York City. If the winds blow, then look out.
If there is a tie after 72 holes then a two-hole aggregate playoff, introduced by the USGA this year, will be used to determine the champion.
Previously playoffs at the U.S. Open were 18 holes, with sudden-death if needed. The last 18-hole playoff occurred in 2008 with Tiger beating Rocco Mediate at Torrey Pines. It was Tiger’s last win in a major.
Some memorable US Opens have unfolded at Shinnecock Hills.
1986: Raymond Floyd wins after shooting a final round 66 and beating the likes of Greg Norman, Lanny Wadkins, and Chip Beck. Norman held the lead after 54 holes.
1995: Corey Pavin won his only major with a two-shot win over Greg Norman who held another 54-hole lead at Shinnecock Hills.
2004: Retief Goosen beats Phil Mickelson by two shots.
The players to watch this year are: Phil Mickelson: The US Open is the only major lefty hasn’t won and he has finished runner-up six times in the US Open. Does he have a magical 4 days left in him at 47 years of age? Don’t count him out.
Tiger Woods: The three-time US Open champ has not won a major in a decade. Shinnecock is a monster to end a major championship drought. His game is coming around.
Justin Rose: Rose plays well at places like Shinnecock and he is a past US Open champion and his game is peaking right now.
Rickie Fowler: Fowler played well at Augusta and may get his first major at Shinnecock. Fowler has that dreaded best player to never win a major tag and let’s hope he gets rid of that soon. Fowler showed me something at Augusta down the stretch. His first major win is coming soon.
Jordan Spieth: Spieth won the US Open in 2015 and at 24 years of age will be a favorite in majors for probably the next decade.
Patrick Reed: The Masters Champ has the game to win a US Open but can he put together back to back great runs in a major?
Matt Kuchar: My gut is telling me the St. Simons Island resident Kuchar is going to contend at Shinnecock. Kuch has been close in majors before. Could this be the weekend?
Prediction: A Mickelson or Kuchar run would be heartwarming. A Tiger run would be ratings gold. At the end of the day I think it comes down to Fowler, Rose, and Spieth.

Upgrade Eligible

I haven’t been this excited about Braves baseball in almost a decade. Heading into June, the Braves have to start thinking about a line-up upgrade at third base, starting pitcher and closer by the trading deadline.
The Braves just released Jose Bautista and will play Johan Camargo at third base for now. This move I feel is temporary and is not the long-term solution at the position for the Braves. So, who can the Braves go get at third base at the deadline?
How about Mike Moustakas from the Kansas City Royals? Moustakas tested the free agent market last winter and got a bad deal, coming off a 38-homer season only to settle for a one-year, $6.5 million deal with the team he expected move on from. The Royals won a World Series with Moustakas in 2015 so he knows the postseason grind and could be a calming presence in the locker room in a stretch run for the playoffs. T
he Royals are currently 19-36 and are going nowhere in the AL Central so it is time to rebuild that franchise. Moustakas is hitting .275 and has 11 HR’s and 35 RBI’s in 207 at bats this season. He turns 30 in September so he is in his prime.
The Braves farm system is loaded with talent and you could package Camargo and a young arm in the system to get him. Moustakas bats third in the Royals batting order and he could be plugged in anywhere from 4th to 6th in the Braves order and is a drastic power and production upgrade from Camargo.
I think the Braves can make this deal happen and Moustakas could be the solution for Atlanta at 3rd for the next 3-5 years. Did I fail to mention that Moustakas is a two-time American League All-Star?
Josh Donaldson from Toronto could also be an option at 3rd for Atlanta but I think Moustakas is a better and cheaper option. Donaldson makes $22 million a year and Moustakas makes $6.5 million.
At closer the Braves need help. Kelvin Herrera of the Kansas City Royals is the answer. The best closer sure to be available and his stock is high, with 11 saves and no walks in 19 2/3 innings. A 0.92 ERA with 17 strike outs and only one blown save in 21 appearances in 2018.
Can you really depend on Arodys Vizcaino down the stretch? Herrera is 28 years old. Vizcaíno for Herrera in a straight trade.
Immediate help in the rotation is Cole Hamels, Texas Rangers left handed quality starter. The Rangers are not going to pick up his $20 million option next year, which includes a large $6 million buyout and would love to unload him now.
Hamels, a four-time All-Star and 2008 World Series MVP, is 3-5 with a 3.74 ERA. He also has a postseason pedigree that would be perfect for any contender, especially in the National League.
Hamels could be the spark the rotation if the organization feels like they can win now. The 3.74 ERA on a bad Rangers team makes Hamels attractive at the trade deadline. At 34 years of age and 150 wins and 3.38 career ERA, Hamels still has plenty left in the tank. The Rangers are 12.5 games back and currently in last place behind the World Champion Astros in the AL West. It is time to clean house in Arlington. Braves could give up a couple of minor league prospects for Hamels.
As a fan, you would love to see the Braves address all three areas I have outlined above. If I had to prioritize the three areas of concern they would be:

Closer
This Braves team can win now with the right moves at the trading deadline. THIS SEASON!
Dawg Watch

So, you have the Georgia Bulldogs coming three points shy of a national title in 2017 and trying to maintain the momentum of the unexpected title run. The Dawgs are now the hunted instead of the hunter moving forward in year three of the Kirby Smart regime in The Classic City.
Here are 5 Dawgs to watch in 2018:
Deandre Baker: The senior cornerback, when set up against SEC opponents last season, allowed a passer rating of 38.7. That was the second-lowest rating allowed by an SEC cornerback. In his junior season with the Bulldogs, Baker was targeted 42 times and allowed 18 receptions for 209 yards. Baker played in 15 games and also recorded 44 total tackles, 3 interceptions and 9 pass deflections.
When Baker decided to return for his senior season Georgia DC Mel Tucker’s job got a little easier because Baker will shut down one side of the field while UGA gets the other defensive backs some valuable snaps early to get ready for the SEC slate.
Look for Baker to contend for All-American honors and be contender for the Jim Thorpe Award, given annually to the top defensive back in college football.
Richard LeCounte III: The five-star Liberty County product is being counted on to step into a leadership role on the Bulldog defense that lost Roquan Smith to the Chicago Bears.
Kirby Smart has been speaking directly and indirectly to LeCounte through the media about stepping up to being the player the coaching staff envisions him being. Expect a huge year out of LeCounte as he responds to his head coach and the mental side of the game catches up to his fantastic athletic ability.
Monty Rice: How do you replace the best linebacker in UGA football history? Well Monty Rice had 14 tackles in the G-Day game in April and has the confidence of his head coach, who had this to say about Rice after the game: “He’s a great kid, man, He’s one of those that when the lights come on and he gets the chance to play in front of somebody, he flashes more. He just loves the game. He loves contact. He likes to hit.”
That’s all I needed to hear about Rice who will lead this young linebacker group in the fall. Rice will have three years to make his mark in Athens.
Terry Godwin: The former five-star recruit from Hogansville came back for his senior season. Godwin has been the second leading receiver on the team for each of his three seasons and has shown flashes of the lofty recruiting ranking at times during his UGA career.
Godwin is the man and needs to play like the man at WR in 2018. Godwin leads a talented position group that returns two other starters in Riley Ridley, and Mecole Hardman. UGA is loaded at every position on offense.
Justin Fields: The top rated QB in the last recruiting cycle looked the part in the G-Day game. He played better than Jake Fromm in the contest and brings a skill set to the offense that UGA has not seen since DJ Shockley which is the ability to make plays with his feet.
Plug in Tim Tebow’s freshman highlight tape at Florida and you will see how Fields will be used in Athens this year. Justin Fields will have an impact on this football team in the fall in red zone situations. This kid is special.
Kirby is building a monster in Athens, Georgia. Who else can’t wait for September to arrive?
Readying The Ship

When you sit down with Brunswick High head football Coach Sean Pender the first question on your mind is how you replace 31 seniors from a 7-3 football team that shared a region championship from last season.
Pender is very optimistic about the 2018 Pirates as they conclude spring drills.
While youth and inexperience may be a factor going into the 2018 season, work ethic will not. “Our kids come out to practice and compete hard and listen, and this has been a fun group to teach since our winter program started in January” says Pender.
One position group that has a lot of experience returning in 2018 is the offensive line. The offensive line has four experienced players returning led by who Pender calls the best offensive lineman he has ever coached in Warren McClendon.
At 6’5 and 300 lbs, McClendon is a four-star recruit by all the recruiting services. He can play anywhere in the country that he chooses after the 2018 season is complete.
McClendon will play left tackle. AJ Kirkland will move over to center and has the versatility to play guard as well. Brett Hall returns at guard after bulking up to 250 pounds with the off-season strength and conditioning program. Xavier Ramsey will contend for All Region honors at the other tackle position, and Caleb Cook may win the other guard position. Pender thinks his run game will be solid in 2018 with this group leading the way.
Pender who coaches his QB’s really hard thinks he has some quality at the position in KJ Lee and Anthony Mountain.
Lee played some as a freshman in 2017 and has a quick release. He has a solid grasp on the offense according to his head coach. Mountain, a transfer, played the backup role in 2017 at Glynn Academy. He is learning the offense and a new set of fundamentals as he goes from a run-oriented attack to a spread offense. Both will get some serious looks at QB. Watch this battle as it develops over the summer.
Jaylen Trimmings will be the workhorse at RB and has worked really hard in the offseason for the role. The Pirates will be young and talented at WR. Marlon Carmena, Jailyn Jones, Xavier Bean, Amarion Whitfield, Syveion Ellis, Tyrease Jones, Michael McGee, and Mitchell Richburg will get reps at receiver as this offense gets the ball in a lot of hands. Pender is really high on Che Foy who will see double duty at slot and RB in 2018.
Richburg and Mountain will handle the punting duties and Avery Yoak will be the FG kicker in 2018.
On defense the Pirates lost 13 of 15 players who saw varsity action in 2017.
Justin Akra will be the leader in the defensive line. Pender thinks Akra will have a big season in 2018.
Stacy Young is back at OLB/S and is a major college prospect who Pender calls the leader of the defense. Devin Lafayette, Freddy Towns, and Demetrius Hardee will make the Pirate secondary a solid group in the fall.
Keith Garrett, Xavier Stevens, Jaylen Carter, and George Humphries will provide depth on the defensive line.
The Pirates lost a ton at LB due to graduation, but some talent is ready to step in make a name for themselves. AJ Wilson, Octavis Butler, and Ryne Buckley will have to grow up fast and contribute right away.
Offensively, Pender wants to run his base offense and expects his run game to be solid and is looking for consistency in the passing game.
Defensively the head coach says he wants to see his young kids flying to the point of attack in a bad mood and playing fast and physical.
Making The Grade

The AFC South Champions are now a Super Bowl contender. Let’s take a look at the Jags 2018 Draft.
Round 1: Taven Bryan, DT, Florida: With Calvin Ridley going to the Falcons, which nobody saw, the Jaguars selected Bryan out of Florida.
Bryan has Pro Bowl talent, but is raw. He will come in and get some reps in 2018 and will be a future starter at the position.
Try this on for size, Calais Campbell, Yannick Ngakoue, Dante Fowler, Malik Jackson, Marcell Dareus, Abry Jones, Dawaune Smoot, Eli Ankou, and now Taven Bryan opposing teams better get a back-up QB some reps during Jags week. This is a sick unit. The best defensive line position group in all of football. Grade: A as the rich get richer.
Round 2: DJ Chark, WR, LSU: Chark is a burner and will be a vertical threat in this offense.
With the addition of Chark the Jags have two receivers with 4.3 speed. Chark could win a starting job, he is that talented. LSU did not have a QB who could get him the ball consistently.
Chark joins Marquise Lee, Donte Moncrief, Keelan Cole, and Dede Westbrook in a solid receiving unit, even after losing the Allen’s to free agency. Grade: B+. Can Bortles get him the ball?
Round 3: Ronnie Harrison, S, Alabama: I think Harrison is the steal of the Jags draft. He will come in and contribute in 2018 and will be a full time starter in 2019.
He can play either safety spot. I love this pick. He joins a deep unit that includes Tashaun Gipson, Barry Church, and Cody Davis. Harrison will be a Pro Bowl safety one day. Grade A+. Great pick in the third round.
Round 4: Will Richardson, T, NC State: with this selection A. J. Cann is officially put on notice. Pick up your play or Richardson will take your spot at right guard.
If Richardson can come in and compete the OL unit becomes one of the better ones in the NFL. Grade: B+. You can never have enough offensive lineman. Two words here: Leonard Fournette.
Round 6: Tanner Lee, QB, Nebraska: I’m not sure about this pick, but Missouri QB Drew Lock would look great in a Jag uniform in 2019 if QB play struggles. Grade: C. Lee could push Cody Kessler, but who knows.
Round 7: The Jaguars selected outside linebacker Leon Jacobs out of Wisconsin and punter Logan Cooke out of Mississippi State. Jacobs will come in and push Blair Brown and will provide some depth. I like the pick. Grade: B.
Logan Cooke averaged 41.7 yards per kick at Mississippi State. Jags cut Brian Nortman so we will see if Cooke is the answer. Grade B. Anytime you use a draft pick on a kicker they better deliver.

Two from this list have a great shot of playing next year. Lazard should crack the Jags receiving rotation as he has a big frame and could be a great red zone target.
Quenton Meeks will provide depth at corner for the best corner combo in the NFL.
Both Lazard and Meeks were listed in NFL Network Draft Analyst Mike Mayock’s Top 100 so getting these two UDFA’s is a real bargain.
Overall Grade: B+. This was a solid draft for Jacksonville. This team is ready to go to the Super Bowl.
Where Will They Go?

The NFL Draft is upon us. I have had so many people ask me where Sony Michel and Nick Chubb will go in this draft.
The most prolific running back duo in UGA history will make a couple of teams very happy in this draft. So, let us take a look at where these two may be selected.
Nick Chubb: Chubb suffered a major knee injury as a sophomore. However, it looks like he’s moved past that setback.
Chubb is a Frank Gore or Ray Rice type of back who can get you 4-5 yards per carry and then break the 25-yard run in the 4th quarter when a defense is getting worn down.
Chubb is rated in the top 5 in every scout’s review of the RB position. This is a deep draft class at running back. Chubb is the #2 rusher all time in the SEC, which has a rich draft history of churning out elite defensive line talent. Chubb’s game will translate well to the NFL. Look for Chubb to go in the second or third round.
Sony Michel: To me, Sony Michel was the most valuable player on the 2017 Georgia Bulldogs.
Michel made big play after big play in crunch time for the Dawgs magical run in 2017. He can catch out of the backfield, he can make people miss in space, and while he only ran a 4.54 at the combine he plays much faster than that.
Many are saying Michel could be the second back off the board after Saquon Barkley, who many feel is the best prospect in the draft.
Sony Michel is a big-play back and will be a three down back in the NFL. Michel has bulked up and can handle 20 carries per game. Sony Michel could end up being a Pro Bowl type player in the NFL. Look for Sony to be off the board by the mid-second round.
Teams that are in need of help at the running back position:
1) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Bucs cut Doug Martin loose this offseason and now they need someone who can handle 20-25 carries a game to take some pressure off of Jameis Winston who needs to develop into the QB Tampa invested millions in.
2) New York Giants: This team needs help everywhere and I mean everywhere.
3) Carolina Panthers: Christian McCaffrey is a playmaker in space, but a strong, consistent power back is needed.
4) Miami Dolphins: Signing Frank Gore is great short term. Dolphins need to address the position.
5) Detroit Lions: The Lions have not had a running back rush for over 100 yards in a single game since 2013. Ouch!! Even with signing LeGarrette Blount the Lions need major help at the position.
Who will end up taking this UGA dynamic duo?
The Detroit Lions have pick 51 in the second round and I think the Lions will take Sony Michel. Michel will be the long-term solution at RB in Detroit. The Colts have pick 36 and 37 and could take Michel, but I think the Lions snatch him up at pick 51.
Nick Chubb: The Bucs have pick 38, but I don’t think they select a RB with that pick. The Panthers have pick 55 and 85 and I think if Chubb is still on the board at 85 the Panthers take him.
The New York football Giants have pick 69 and if there was ever a player that fit the traditional mold of a New York Giant it would be Nick Chubb. I think Chubb ends up being in the Big Apple and a year one starter in New York.
One thing is for certain with these two and that is they will bring their lunch to work daily and never cause an organization any trouble.
This duo will be greatly missed in Athens, Georgia.
Tiger On The Prowl

The Azaleas are blooming which means one thing to golf fans. Masters week is upon us.
So far in 2018 it has been a crazy sports year. I just watched Kentucky lose in the NCAA tourney to continue to throw it into utter chaos.
Ronald Acuna will start the season in Gwinnett, which is all about money and makes no sense at all. So, the theme in sports this year is to expect the unexpected so I ask this question:
Can Tiger Woods win the 2018 Masters? I’ll get back to that in a few paragraphs.
Here are my favorites in the 2018 Masters:
Phil Mickelson: Lefty just won in Mexico for the first time in five years and looked like the old Phil in doing so. The three-time champion loves Augusta and will contend this year.
Sergio Garcia: The defending champ is starting to round into form and has been near the top of leaderboards lately. Look for Sergio to be in one of the final groups on Sunday now that he knows how to win a major.
Rickie Fowler: He is overdue to win a major and his time in nearing if not the Masters then you have to think he will get one in 2018. This kid is just too good not have a green jacket in his closet one day. Fowler is going to be leading this tournament sometime on Sunday, but can he hold on is the question?
Jordan Spieth: Spieth is the best putter in the world and that makes him dangerous in Augusta and he will contend.
Justin Rose: Rose has the all-around game to compete for the green jacket and lost in a playoff to Sergio last year and that will be a huge motivator for Rose in 2018.
Now back to Tiger. Just a few months ago Tiger was ranked about 600 in the world in the World Golf Rankings maybe even higher. The golfing world left him for dead and Woods recovering from another back injury finally got back on the course. Then he started to contend in tournaments and now the Masters is here and Tiger is a betting favorite.
When Tiger contends people tune in and that is great for the game. Tiger will contend and the 2018 Masters will have record viewership.
I like Rose to win, but with all of the madness going on in March with the Loyola- Chicago’s of the world makes you think some special is in the works for Augusta.
Tiger won his first Masters in grand fashion at 21 years of age in 1997 and now 21 years later in 2018 the comeback will be complete as Tiger roars to another Green Jacket.
Better tune in folks because the 2018 Masters will be special.
Tiger Woods your 2018 Masters Champion. That would be great for sports. This would mark a historic comeback of a sports icon that everyone wrote.
I remember when I was a kid the experts wrote off Jack Nicklaus in 1980 and he finished off his career with three more majors with the 1980 US Open, and PGA Championship and of course the 1986 Masters.
Tiger Woods is great for professional golf.
Oh, The Madness

It is that time of the year again where you fill out your brackets and let the madness start.
As I type this story I am sitting here watching Arizona getting blown out by Buffalo by 21 points and not many will have predicted this. I had Arizona going to the sweet 16 in my bracket.
Another surprise in my bracket was Miami going down in the first round to Loyola Chicago. I had the Canes going deep into the tournament. How many people on social media will say they picked Buffalo and Loyola in their big money brackets?
So how are my brackets holding up? I am taking a beating in my South Bracket so far with Arizona and Miami losing.
I am on the Virginia bandwagon as I have the Cavs coming out of the South. Virginia plays defense like the old school Bad Boy Detroit Pistons of the late 1980’s and will be a tough team to beat in this tourney.
In my West bracket Houston came through for me with a first round buzzer beater against San Diego State. I have picked Ohio State to upset its way to the regional final by knocking off Gonzaga and number 1 seeded Xavier along the way.
I have Michigan beating North Carolina in the sweet sixteen to face the Buckeyes in the regional final. Can you imagine a Michigan/Ohio State regional final to go to the final four? The West is my upset bracket. I have Michigan coming out of the West.
My East bracket is all about Villanova. I have Nova going through this bracket and making it to the final four. I have seventh seeded Arkansas upsetting Purdue to get to the sweet sixteen. I have Texas Tech beating both Florida and Arkansas to get to Villanova in the regional final.
My Midwest Bracket held up today with Rhode Island beating Oklahoma in OT today. Now they face Duke where their season will end.
I have top seeded Kansas getting to regional final by beating Clemson. Kansas over the years has won me a lot money in previous editions of March Madness. I have third seeded Michigan State beating Duke in the sweet sixteen and then beating Kansas for a trip to the final four.
My final four match ups are: Virginia vs Michigan. Villanova vs Michigan State
Two number one seeds and two number three seeds. I am taking Virginia over Michigan because the ACC champs can defend better than any team in this tournament.
I am taking Michigan State over Villanova because the Spartans are just due under Tom Izzo to win a high profile matchup.
In the title game I have Virginia cutting down the nets baby. Virginia proves that the ACC is the best basketball conference in the country.
I will leave you this week with this little nugget my girlfriend picked Arizona to win the National Championship in her bracket.

Flying High Hawks

As the NBA playoffs loom on the horizon there is one absolute we all know, and that is the Atlanta Hawks will not be in the NBA playoffs.
The Hawks are 20-45 currently and will be in the NBA draft lottery. If the Hawks tank down the stretch they could end up with the worst record in the NBA. That title is currently held by Memphis sitting at 18-46. Atlanta is currently tied with Orlando and Brooklyn with the worst record in the Eastern Conference.
Can we really expect great things from a Hawks franchise that traded Bill Russell to the Celtics in 1956 when the Hawks were based in St. Louis? Russell ended up leading the Celtics to 11 titles.
While these current Hawks aren’t very good here goes my all-time starting five for the Atlanta Hawks:
PG: Mookie Blaylock: While playing for Atlanta, Blaylock led the league in steals per game for two consecutive seasons in 1997 and 1998.
He made his first and only All-Star game in 1994. As a result of his quick hands, Blaylock was selected to two All-Defensive first teams and four All-Defensive second teams.
Mookie was a pretty good shooter from the outside as well with very good 3-point range. I almost picked Doc Rivers as my point guard, but I think Mookie was a better player overall.
SG: Pistol Pete Maravich: The Hawks drafted Pistol Pete with the third pick of the 1970 NBA draft out of LSU.
Pete played 4 years in Atlanta and made NBA all-star teams and averaged over 25 points a game twice in his time in Atlanta, and in grand Hawks style Atlanta traded Pistol Pete to the expansion New Orleans Jazz for two players and 4 draft picks.
During his ten-year career in the NBA, Maravich played in 658 games, averaging 24.2 points and 5.4 assists per contest. In 1987, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and his No. 7 jersey has been retired by both the Jazz and the New Orleans Pelicans, as well as his No. 44 jersey by the Atlanta Hawks.
Pistol Pete died at age 40 in 1988 playing in a pick-up basketball game.
C: Dikembe Mutombo: The 7’2 260-pound center who began his career with the Georgetown Hoyas was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players of all time, winning the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award four times; he was also an eight-time All-Star.
Mt. Mutombo played in Atlanta for five years then was traded to Philadelphia in grand Hawks fashion at the trading deadline in 2001.
PF: Paul Millsap: Millsap played in Atlanta from 2013 to 2017 and was a four time NBA all-star after spending his first seven seasons in Utah. He helped lead the Hawks to a 60-22 record during the 2014-15 season and lost to Cleveland in the Eastern Conference Finals.
I was torn between Millsap and Al Horford at power forward.
SF: Dominique Wilkins: The Human Highlight Film is the greatest player in Atlanta Hawks history. Wilkins was drafted by the Utah Jazz with the third pick of the NBA draft in 1982.
Utah, with cash flow issues at the time, traded Wilkins to the Hawks for John Drew and cash.
Wilkins was the best dunker in the NBA and the leader of some pretty good Hawks teams of the 1980’s.
A nine-time NBA All-Star and the winner of two NBA slam dunk contests, Wilkins registered 26,668 points and 7,169 rebounds in his NBA career.
He was also robbed of 2-3 slam dunk titles as well. His #21 jersey was retired by the Hawks in 2001.
Can you believe the Atlanta Hawks traded their best player ever to the Clippers in 1994? This is still the only time in NBA history a team in first place in their conference traded its leading scorer after the All-Star break for Danny Manning.
In 2006, Wilkins was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Outside of Philips Arena now sits a statue of Dominique Wilkins. I have looked for the Danny Manning statue in the same location but it is nowhere to be found.
