Glynn Academy Wins City Championship

The Glynn Academy Red Terrors won another city championship Friday night against the Brunswick High Pirates.
The Terrors won 17-12 to take home the trophy for the 5th consecutive year. Red Terror Head Coach Rocky Hidalgo has never lost to Brunswick High, a perfect 5-0. The loss for the Pirates marks the 2nd consecutive graduating class that never beat Glynn.
Glynn marched the first drive of the game down the field and scored a touchdown for a 7-0. That lead would hold through the first half and Glynn went into the locker room up 7-0 at the half.
The Red Terrors added a field goal in the 3rd quarter for a 10-0 lead. Then, in the 4th quarter with five minutes and change left in the game, Glynn added another TD to go up 17-0 and it looked like the Terrors would coast to another city championship.
However, the Pirates did not make that easy on the Terrors. Brunswick finally answered and scored a TD of their own to make the score 17-6. The Pirates went for 2 and did not get it.
Brunswick then recovered an on-side kick and would score another touchdown to make the score 17-12. The Pirates would once again go for 2 and once again be unsuccessful.
With under a minute to go the Pirates attempted another onside kick, but this time the Terrors would recover and run out the clock on Brunswick for the 17-12 win.
The win gives back to back wins for Glynn and takes them to 5-3 on the season and 2-0 in the region.
Richmond Hill ended up beating Bradwell Institute, which now leaves the Red Terrors in first place in the region by themselves. The Red Terrors still have to play Effingham and Bradwell in region to close the season.
If the Terrors win both games they will win their 4th consecutive region and claim a #1 seed heading into the GHSA playoffs.
The first round opponent will likely be Mundy’s Hill for Glynn if they did win the region again.
Glynn Tames Wildcats

The Glynn Academy Red Terrors entered Friday night’s game coming off a bye week.
The bye week may have come at a good time for the Terrors as the team had dropped three consecutive games; Wayne, Ware and Camden.
Glynn kicked off their region schedule Friday night hosting the Richmond Hill Wildcats. Richmond Hill was coming off of a 41-7 blowout win over Brunswick High and was sitting in first place in the region.
The Wildcats had lost their starting running back in week 2 and had struggled scoring points ever since, until the 41-point explosion against the Pirates.
Richmond Hill entered the game at 3-3 and the Red Terrors also entered Friday night’s contest at 3-3.
The Red Terrors had not lost four straight in the Rocky Hidalgo era. Speaking of Coach Hidalgo, the Red Terrors head coach made change at QB. Senior Sam Wagner got the start under center.
The Glynn defense and special teams dominated the first half. A pick six gave the Red Terrors a 7-0 lead. GA would extend the lead on a returned missed field goal for a 14-0 lead. The Terrors would add a second pick six for 21-0 2nd quarter lead.
Glynn would take that lead in the locker room at the half.
The Red Terrors would then go into clock chewing mode, which is something Glynn has always done under Rocky Hidalgo.
The Wildcats would make a long field goal to get point on the board in the 3rd quarter.
That score would be the score heading into the 4th, 21-3.
Glynn QB Sam Wagner would score a late touchdown diving into the end zone from the one-yard line.
The Red Terrors would close out Richmond Hill 28-3.
With the win the Red Terrors improve to 4-3 on the season and take first place in the region at 1-0.
Next week Glynn Academy will play a desperate Brunswick High Pirate team for the City Championship. BHS has lost to both Richmond Hill and Effingham in the region and will be in “must win mode” to make the playoffs.
Terrors Get Chomped

The Glynn Academy Red Terrors got some good news before they ever even took the field Friday night against Ware County.
The Red Terrors were awarded with a forfeit win over Fort Dorchester. Glynn played Fort Dorchester in week one and took a 37-21 loss to the Patriots.
The governing body of athletics for the state of South Carolina deemed that Fort Dorchester had been playing with an ineligible player and would be required to forfeit all games the ineligible player had participated in.
Thus, the loss Glynn had to the Patriots became a 1-0 win due to the forfeit. The forfeit improved the Red Terrors’ record from 2-2 to 3-1 heading into the game with rival, Ware County.
Glynn Academy had won 5 straight against Ware and had not lost to their rival since 2014.
Ware County was coming off a bye week and was looking to regain control of the series; the Gators had owned the Red Terrors for over a decade before Glynn started its streak.
The Gators came into the Glynn game at 3-1, with their only loss to archrival Coffee County by a touchdown.
However, the first half would not be kind to the Red Terrors. Ware would punt on their first possession of the game and then score touchdowns on their next three possessions.
The Gators would miss 2 extra points and went into the locker room at the half up 19-0 over Rocky Hidalgo’s Red Terrors.
The Terrors would answer to start the second half. Glynn put together a solid drive and would punch the ball into the end zone on a 2-yard run by QB TJ Lewis. The Terrors would have the PAT blocked but would get to within 2 score 19-6.
The Gators would immediately answer. Ware would score a long TD on the very next play for a 26-6 lead.
Ware County would go into “clock kill” mode on offense and eventually salted away the clock.
Ware would come away with a 26-6 win. The loss is the 2nd in a row for the Red Terrors and their record falls to 3-2.
Glynn Academy will travel to Kingsland next week to take on the Camden County Wildcats. Camden is 3-1 on the season.

Glynn Stung By Yellow Jackets

The Glynn Academy Red Terrors took to the road this past week to take on the undefeated Wayne County Yellow Jackets.
Wayne County had looked impressive coming in with a big win over Richmond Hill two weeks ago.
The Terrors had a bye week prior to the game and had only played a half of football in two weeks. That half coming against Groves and the second half was cancelled due to weather.
The Wayne County Yellow Jackets took control of the game early, scoring on their first drive of the game for a 7-0 lead.
Wayne would add to it in the 2nd quarter and would lead 14-0 before Glynn would rally.
The Red Terrors put a TD on the board to close within 14-7 and would then score on a 1-yd TD run by quarterback TJ Lewis to tie the game heading into the half.
However, Wayne would take control of the game again. MJ Fuller returned the opening kick of the second half 80 yards for the touchdown. The Yellow Jackets converted a 2-point conversion for a 22-14 lead.
Wayne would then recover a kick that hit a Glynn player on the kickoff and then would march the ball into the endzone for a 29-14 advantage early in the 3rd quarter.
The Yellow Jackets went into “clock chewing” mode after that and ran the ball at will against the Terror defensive front.
The Red Terrors began to amass some momentum in the 4th quarter, however that momentum would be squashed as the Terror QB TJ Lewis threw into double coverage and the Yellow Jackets intercepted the pass inside the 20.
Keep in mind the Terrors are a young football team and this was a great measuring stick to see there they stood. You can expect Coach Hidalgo to have his Terrors ready to play next week and to have learned from the mistakes made against Wayne.
With the loss the Terrors drop to 2-2 on the season and will travel to Waycross next week to take on rival Ware County.
Glynn Academy has not lost to the Gators since 2014.
Ware will be coming off of a bye week.

College Football Fallout Week 2

Week two of the college football season is now in the books and some great outcomes and storylines arose from the “Saturday that was”.
I wonder what it will take for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to consider moving in a different direction, away from Paul Johnson.
A loss to non-Power 5 South Florida has Tech fans groaning again about Johnson and that Triple Option. However, the problem isn’t the triple option or even Paul Johnson’s coaching, the problem is recruiting.
Georgia Tech was considerably outmanned against South Florida, which had athletes all over the field and that ultimately reflected on the scoreboard.
Also, currently, South Florida and UCF are the best 2 non-Power 5 teams in the country. Thus, there should not be a lot of outrage amongst the Yellow Jacket faithful about losing to the Bulls. They are currently better.
Speaking of better, I think it is pretty safe to say the Georgia Bulldogs are better than the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Dawgs went to half up by 10 and then Kirby Smart “let the Dawgs off the chain” in the second half and South Carolina had no answers.
In my opinion, Georgia and Alabama are the two best teams in the country, again.
A team that is not among the best 2 in the country is Florida. The Gators had beaten Kentucky 31 straight time and had not lost to the Wildcats since 1986.
That streak is over. Kentucky took advantage of a bad Florida offense and came away with a 27-16 win in Gainesville. Yes, in the swamp.
Long gone are the days where no one won in the Swamp except for Florida.
One thing that truly amazes me is how the University of Florida cannot find a decent QB when they are the flagship school for one of the four most talent rich states in the country.
Especially, when you thing about the great QB’s that have played there in the last 30 years. One thing is for sure, Feleipe Franks has a lot to work on.
One last thing, for people who are not paying attention, LSU is better than you think.
Next week the Bayou Bengals will have a chance to prove this to the country as they will take on the Tigers from the plains in Auburn.
The winner will have the inside shot of dethroning Alabama in the SEC West.

Georgia Bulldogs 2018 Season Opener.

A frenzied crowd awaited the 2018 kickoff for the Georgia Bulldogs at Sanford Stadium.
The Bulldogs hosted the Austin Peay Governors from Clarksville, TN.
In the thirty minutes leading up to kickoff we saw video after video on the jumbotron in reference to the 2017 season and championship game run.
And why not it had been almost 30 years since Georgia had a chance to win a National Championship.
During the player intros on the video board it was very obvious there were several familiar names returning on offense.
However, not so much the case on the defensive side of the ball. It looks to be a very young Georgia defense.
Jake Fromm started the game for the Bulldogs at QB and Georgia scored 17 points in the 1st quarter to lead 17-0 at the end of the 1st.
Fromm led Georgia to 10 of those points of offense and the other TD was due to a turnover by Austin Peay inside the Georgia 15-yard line.
Justin Fields came out and started the 2nd quarter and on his first drive at the collegiate level, Demetris Robertson scored on a 74-yard running play.
The Dawgs would also score on Fields’ 2nd drive to go up 31-0.
Fromm returned to the game with a little more than 2 minutes to go before halftime. The Georgia QB would promptly hit Mecole Hardman for a 59-yard touchdown in the middle of the field. Hardman would simply outrun the angles for the TD after the catch. Georgia led at the half 38-0.
Fields would start the second half at QB and throw a 12-yard TD pass late in the third quarter to TE Isaac Nauta. That would end any chance of a miraculous comeback for Austin Peay, looking at a 45-0 deficit.
Matthew Downing would come in after the TD pass from Fields at QB for some late game playing time.
One thing is for sure, Georgia is loaded at RB. D’Andre Swift, Elijah Holyfield, Brian Herrien, James Cook, and Demetris Robertson all had impactful carries.
Georgia would go on to win the game impressively. It was a positive season opener for UGA, a big win against a team they should blowout and no serious injuries.
The South Carolina Gamecocks await the Bulldogs next week in Columbia for a key SEC East matchup.
Red Terrors Hitting Their Stride?

The Glynn Academy Red Terrors improved to 2-1 on the 2018 season with 49-0 win over the Groves Rebels.
The Red Terrors were coming off of a 42-6 woodshedding of the Washington Bulldogs.
Groves had given 77 points the week prior to the Effingham Rebels and came into Glynn County Stadium winless on the season.
The game was called after the first half due to inclement weather. Groves was more than happy to get out of Glynn County Stadium after a half.
Rocky Hidalgo’s Red Terrors, once again, dominated on the ground and ran the ball at will.
Glynn QB TJ Lewis continues to improve a weekly basis. The growth of Lewis will prove more and more important as the playoffs approach and into the playoffs.
The Red Terrors will now get a week off to rest and get ready for the South Georgia Gauntlet.
The next time the Red Terrors will take the field it will be against undefeated Wayne County in Jesup.
The Terrors took on an undefeated Yellow Jacket team last season in Jesup and when the night was over Glynn had handed Wayne their first loss of the season (6-1).
The week after that Glynn will once again take to the road, this time to Waycross to take on Ware in the Swamp.
The Terrors have had a great deal of success against the Gators, reeling off four straight victories against Ware.
In case that wasn’t a stiff enough test, Glynn will then travel down to Chris Gilman Stadium in Kingsland to take on the resurgent Camden County Wildcats.
The Red Terrors have picked off Camden two straight years and it hasn’t been close either year.
These three games could go a long way in determining how good these young Terrors will be moving forward into the playoffs.
For now, Rocky Hidalgo’s young Red Terrors sit at 2-1 on the young season
