College Football Fallout Week 2

Week two of the college football season is now in the books and some great outcomes and storylines arose from the “Saturday that was”.
I wonder what it will take for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to consider moving in a different direction, away from Paul Johnson.
A loss to non-Power 5 South Florida has Tech fans groaning again about Johnson and that Triple Option. However, the problem isn’t the triple option or even Paul Johnson’s coaching, the problem is recruiting.
Georgia Tech was considerably outmanned against South Florida, which had athletes all over the field and that ultimately reflected on the scoreboard.
Also, currently, South Florida and UCF are the best 2 non-Power 5 teams in the country. Thus, there should not be a lot of outrage amongst the Yellow Jacket faithful about losing to the Bulls. They are currently better.
Speaking of better, I think it is pretty safe to say the Georgia Bulldogs are better than the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Dawgs went to half up by 10 and then Kirby Smart “let the Dawgs off the chain” in the second half and South Carolina had no answers.
In my opinion, Georgia and Alabama are the two best teams in the country, again.
A team that is not among the best 2 in the country is Florida. The Gators had beaten Kentucky 31 straight time and had not lost to the Wildcats since 1986.
That streak is over. Kentucky took advantage of a bad Florida offense and came away with a 27-16 win in Gainesville. Yes, in the swamp.
Long gone are the days where no one won in the Swamp except for Florida.
One thing that truly amazes me is how the University of Florida cannot find a decent QB when they are the flagship school for one of the four most talent rich states in the country.
Especially, when you thing about the great QB’s that have played there in the last 30 years. One thing is for sure, Feleipe Franks has a lot to work on.
One last thing, for people who are not paying attention, LSU is better than you think.
Next week the Bayou Bengals will have a chance to prove this to the country as they will take on the Tigers from the plains in Auburn.
The winner will have the inside shot of dethroning Alabama in the SEC West.

Georgia Bulldogs 2018 Season Opener.

A frenzied crowd awaited the 2018 kickoff for the Georgia Bulldogs at Sanford Stadium.
The Bulldogs hosted the Austin Peay Governors from Clarksville, TN.
In the thirty minutes leading up to kickoff we saw video after video on the jumbotron in reference to the 2017 season and championship game run.
And why not it had been almost 30 years since Georgia had a chance to win a National Championship.
During the player intros on the video board it was very obvious there were several familiar names returning on offense.
However, not so much the case on the defensive side of the ball. It looks to be a very young Georgia defense.
Jake Fromm started the game for the Bulldogs at QB and Georgia scored 17 points in the 1st quarter to lead 17-0 at the end of the 1st.
Fromm led Georgia to 10 of those points of offense and the other TD was due to a turnover by Austin Peay inside the Georgia 15-yard line.
Justin Fields came out and started the 2nd quarter and on his first drive at the collegiate level, Demetris Robertson scored on a 74-yard running play.
The Dawgs would also score on Fields’ 2nd drive to go up 31-0.
Fromm returned to the game with a little more than 2 minutes to go before halftime. The Georgia QB would promptly hit Mecole Hardman for a 59-yard touchdown in the middle of the field. Hardman would simply outrun the angles for the TD after the catch. Georgia led at the half 38-0.
Fields would start the second half at QB and throw a 12-yard TD pass late in the third quarter to TE Isaac Nauta. That would end any chance of a miraculous comeback for Austin Peay, looking at a 45-0 deficit.
Matthew Downing would come in after the TD pass from Fields at QB for some late game playing time.
One thing is for sure, Georgia is loaded at RB. D’Andre Swift, Elijah Holyfield, Brian Herrien, James Cook, and Demetris Robertson all had impactful carries.
Georgia would go on to win the game impressively. It was a positive season opener for UGA, a big win against a team they should blowout and no serious injuries.
The South Carolina Gamecocks await the Bulldogs next week in Columbia for a key SEC East matchup.
Red Terrors Hitting Their Stride?

The Glynn Academy Red Terrors improved to 2-1 on the 2018 season with 49-0 win over the Groves Rebels.
The Red Terrors were coming off of a 42-6 woodshedding of the Washington Bulldogs.
Groves had given 77 points the week prior to the Effingham Rebels and came into Glynn County Stadium winless on the season.
The game was called after the first half due to inclement weather. Groves was more than happy to get out of Glynn County Stadium after a half.
Rocky Hidalgo’s Red Terrors, once again, dominated on the ground and ran the ball at will.
Glynn QB TJ Lewis continues to improve a weekly basis. The growth of Lewis will prove more and more important as the playoffs approach and into the playoffs.
The Red Terrors will now get a week off to rest and get ready for the South Georgia Gauntlet.
The next time the Red Terrors will take the field it will be against undefeated Wayne County in Jesup.
The Terrors took on an undefeated Yellow Jacket team last season in Jesup and when the night was over Glynn had handed Wayne their first loss of the season (6-1).
The week after that Glynn will once again take to the road, this time to Waycross to take on Ware in the Swamp.
The Terrors have had a great deal of success against the Gators, reeling off four straight victories against Ware.
In case that wasn’t a stiff enough test, Glynn will then travel down to Chris Gilman Stadium in Kingsland to take on the resurgent Camden County Wildcats.
The Red Terrors have picked off Camden two straight years and it hasn’t been close either year.
These three games could go a long way in determining how good these young Terrors will be moving forward into the playoffs.
For now, Rocky Hidalgo’s young Red Terrors sit at 2-1 on the young season

Terrors Bedevil Washington

The Glynn Academy Red Terrors hosted the Washington High Bulldogs Friday night between the bricks at Glynn County Stadium.
Washington High came in 0-1, losing to rival Douglass 22-12 in their opener.
The Terrors were coming off a loss to powerhouse Fort Dorchester in the opening week of the season.
Washington High jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. The Bulldogs took over on downs after a Glynn fake punt failed and the Bulldogs cashed the turnover in for six points. Washington High missed the PAT.
However, it did not take long for the Red Terrors to take control of the game after that. Glynn led 14-6 after the first quarter and 28-6 at the half.
The Red Terrors added a touchdown in the third to go up 35-6.
Midway through the 4th quarter the Terrors added another score on the ground to go up 42-6.
That 42-6 score would hold as the final. Glynn would score 42 unanswered points to close out the Washington High Bulldogs.
The Terrors rushing attack dominated the game. Glynn’s QB TJ Lewis looked great on the ground and completed several passes, leaving the Bulldog defense befuddled on how to stop the Terrors’ offense.
Glynn had five different players score touchdowns. Quantavious Bostic scored 2 touchdowns, TJ Lewis rushed for a TD, Nolan Grant pitched in a score for Glynn, Caden Hutchinson put a TD on the board and Alan Partin also found pay dirt for the Red Terrors.
Defensive End Marlon Taylor was a monster on defense for the Red Terrors and looked almost unblockable.
The young Red Terrors showed some improvement from last week but still has some room to get better in the big picture.
With the win, the Red Terrors improve to 1-1 on the season. Glynn Academy will host Groves next week between the bricks at Glynn County Stadium before getting a week off and then heading into a tough three game non-region stretch against Wayne, Ware and Camden. All of those games on the road.
Washington High falls to 0-2 on the season.
The game against Groves next week will be the Red Terrors’ Homecoming.

Young Terrors Earning Stripes

The Red Terrors opened the 2018 season at home against Fort Dorchester from South Carolina. Fort Dorchester is a powerhouse program in the Palmetto State.
Glynn Academy came in with a very young team having lost 19 seniors. The Red Terrors found themselves down 28-7 early.
Glynn fought back and pulled within 31-21 before Fort Dorchester pulled away late and went on to win 36-21 over the Red Terrors.
Head Coach Rocky Hidalgo typically schedules tough games early in the season to test his team so the Terrors will be fire tested come playoff time. This was no different.
We can look for the Red Terrors to have some growing pains early on in the season with a young team.
Glynn will see Wayne, Ware, and Camden in the coming weeks, all non-region games. The Red Terrors will travel to Jesup, Waycross and Kingsland for those games, all consecutively.
However, before that the Red Terrors will host Washington High next week between the bricks at Glynn County Stadium.
Washington is a high that is rebuilding and should be a game the Red Terrors will be able to see their young talent play well.
Once Glynn get into region play they will see Richmond Hill, Brunswick High, Effingham and Bradwell. The Red Terrors are the favorite to win the region but need to see their young talent mature for that to happen.
After Washington High the Red Terrors will play Groves at home before starting with the aforementioned gauntlet with Wayne, Ware and Camden. Groves is another program that the Terrors should play well against.
Overall, a good effort by the Red Terrors to stay in the game against Fort Dorchester and get the game close. A lot of good things happened in the second half for the Red Terrors to build upon.
If this season goes the same way the previous few have under Rocky Hidalgo the Red Terrors will once again make a deep playoff run and will be a state title contender.
Wildcats On The Hunt

This is the year that the Camden County Wildcat faithful have been pointing to as far the proud program getting back to powerhouse status.
The last few years have been lean in Kingsland and it has shown on the football field.
The Wildcats are coming off of a 3-7 campaign, which included losses to rivals Brunswick High, Glynn Academy, Lowndes, Colquitt, and Tift.
Camden has not won a region game in 2 years and have not made the playoffs in that span. A two-year absence from the playoffs is a huge deal for this storied program when you consider this is a program that won 14 straight region titles, yes 14 straight. Likely, a feat that will never again be accomplished again. Not to mention, 3 state titles in that same time frame.
Second year head coach, Bob Sphire is looking to get Camden back to being at least respectable.
The Wildcats will have the most talent in Kingsland that they have had since their last region championship. This roster will consist of mostly juniors, who are very talented and have taken their lumps in a tough region the last two years.
Camden will open up with three straight home games against West Forsythe, Wren and Locust Grove. All three of these games are winnable and I expect Camden to start undefeated through these first three.
Camden will then hit the road Richmond Hill and Brunswick. I look for Richmond Hill to play a competitive game against Camden but fall in the end. I also look for the Wildcats to beat BHS, as the Pirates will be young and inexperienced. However, look for the Camden/BHS game to be one of the better games of the season.
The Wildcats will return to Chris Gilman Stadium to take on Glynn Academy, who has blown Camden out the last two seasons. This game may be a little closer but the Terrors are loaded and may win a state title. Look for another Red Terror win against Camden.
Next up for Camden will be Colleton County from South Carolina. Camden will have too much depth for the Cougars and Camden will get the W at home.
The Wildcats will begin region play the following three games. Two games on the road against Colquitt and Lowndes in back to back weeks will be tough. Camden needs to split these two games.
I like Camden to take down Tift at home in the season finale and get back into the playoffs for the first time in a couple of years.
Prediction: 8-2.
Tough Voyage For Buccaneers

TheSouthernSportsEdition.com news services
The MCA Buccaneers finished the 2017 season with a 4-6 record and a 1-4 record in region 3-A.
The Bucs have since fired or accepted the resignation of (whichever story you choose to believe), Terel Toomer. Toomer was an assistant under former coach Robbie Robinson and was the Defensive Coordinator 2 years ago for the Bucs, during the state finals appearance.
Enter Tony Glazer. Glazer was hired from Liberty County, where he served as the Defensive Coordinator and coached Raekwon McMillan and Richard LeCounte. Both, of course, have moved on to bigger and better things.
Glazer is the 5th coach the Bucs have had in 7 years and he will mostly be charged with adding stability to a job that coach’s keep getting fired from.
The Bucs also had former starting QB, Denver Anthony, leave the program for Frederica.
With only a few weeks left before the start of the season, MCA currently only has 23 players on the roster.
With so few bodies it will likely make for another long season in Darien.
The Bucs will open at home at The Ship against Pierce County. The speed and depth of Pierce will be too much for MCA.
MCA will then host the Brunswick High Pirates, a 6A squad that has around 100 players on the roster. Too much depth for the Bucs and they will fall to 0-2.
In the third game of the season they again host, but the result should not be any different against Jenkins County.
McIntosh County Academy will then take to the road for their next two contests against Calvary Day and Brantley. The Brantley County game may be close but I still think the Herons will be too much for the Bucs.
MCA will get back to The Ship in Darien on October 5, but another loss awaits against region foe Savannah Country Day.
On October 12 MCA travels back to Savannah for a date with Savannah Christian, this should result in the 7th straight loss of the season.
Back home on October 19 against Claxton. Normally, I would take MCA in this game. However, with only 23 players on the roster and nagging injuries having set in by this point the depth will be an issue.
On October 26 the Bucs will play their most winnable game on the schedule in Portal. They will have to travel to just outside of Statesboro to play that game.
Then of course, MCA will wrap things up with the cross-over game as they play in a sub region. I don’t see that going well either.
Prediction: 1-9 for the Bucs. It is hard to win with only 20-ish kids on a roster in GHSA.
There will be some bright spots. You will see the Buccaneers become much better defensively under Glazer and, if healthy, you will come to know the name Josh Amerson at linebacker.
