Who Is Zamir White?
TheSouthernSportsEdition.com news services
The eyes of the college football world were glued to their collective phone screens this past Tuesday. Multiple Facebook Live streams showed a podium centered in the cafeteria of Scotland High in Laurinburg, North Carolina.
A crowd, made up of coaches, teachers, family, and ever present media members gathered near the podium. Zamir White, the nation’s number one back was set to announce where he would be spending his college years. Dressed in a black suit, with a small red boutonniere attached to his left lapel, White waited patiently for his moment.
Bob Stoops To Georgia

That time of year that a majority of sports don’t look forward to is right around the corner. All the college teams have finished up their seasons, the only professional league going is Major League Baseball (not much to cheer about once again for those us in the Southeast), and football is still more than a month away.
For a desperate few, they will turn to tennis and golf; two sports I’m not averse to watching, but I realize I’m in the minority.
Since this is the start of a slow period, it’s also the perfect time to ask some of those hypothetical questions that there just enough time for when you’re busy writing about whether Matt Ryan will be able to repeat as MVP, or if John Calipari really is Bill Paxton’s character from True Lies. (I may be onto something there).
So, I’m going to ask a question where there is at least a 50/50 chance you’ve asked yourself this already; If Georgia underperforms this upcoming season, and it’s obvious Kirby Smart is struggling, does Georgia send out their own Bat Signal with hopes of having Bob Stoops answer the call?
Win Or NFL Success?

With the NFL Draft barely in the rear view mirror and the NBA Draft on the horizon, there is an awful lot of grandstanding this time of year.
Instead of discussing the outcome of the past season, the argument tends to veer towards the level of success or failure of past players on a professional level.
For recruiting purposes, it makes complete sense. It’s much easier to sell a recruit on your school if you have examples of players who played the same position and found success at the next level.
What Is Next For D’Antne Demery
TheSouthernSportsEdition.com news services
Last June as I watched D’Antne Demery commit to The University of Georgia at a ceremony at Brunswick High School and I was overcome with pride as ‘Big Man’, as we call him, became the first Pirate to sign with UGA right out of high school at a position of need for the Bulldogs which is offensive line.
Now 10 short months later I read this on the internet posted by several UGA media sites copied from Police Reports:
G-Day Preview

Rejoice Georgia Bulldog fans, the first game of the 2017 season is upon us!
Ok, so it is actually the second if you count National Signing Day as a competition, and it is only a scrimmage.
However, it is not a replay and for those of us starved for football at this time of year, we will take it!
ACC Is Better Than SEC
TheSouthernSportsEdition.com news services
Let me start by saying I picked North Carolina to cut down the nets this past Monday night and I have the SSE article from a couple of weeks ago to prove it.
I have been mulling this article over on my mind for a few weeks now. Folks that know me know that I am a die-hard SEC supporter and I make no bones about it.
So, take notice when I type this this next sentence. The ACC is better right now than the SEC. Yes, I said it. Now that I have that out of the way here is why.
SEC Odds

While spring practice is going on all over the college football world, The Golden Nugget in Las Vegas released their odds to reach the Southeastern Conference championship game.
It is really a mystery as to how they handicap a league even before an entire recruiting class, however Vegas wasn’t built on winners so it often pays to heed their prognostications.
Georgia Bulldogs Offense Preview

As G-Day rolls around once again for the Georgia Bulldogs what will unfold for the Georgia Bulldogs in 2017.
93,000 showed up excited for the spring game last year, and despite that excitement the Dawg struggled at times and finished with an 8-5 record after dropping home games to Vandy, Tennessee, and GT.
The 2016 Dawgs did not know how to finish teams off. The defense played well enough to win 10 games last year but the offense struggled moving the ball in key moments against the Florida’s of the world and mental mistakes like a late interception against Georgia Tech that set up a winning drive for the Jackets.
Fast forward to year two in the Kirby regime and things look a lot better after Smart hauled in the highest ranked recruiting class in a long time in the Classic City.
Georgia Bulldogs Thin At QB
TheSouthernSportsEdition.com news services
The Georgia Bulldogs will not be kicking off their spring practice for another couple of weeks, but that does not stop the news from coming out of Athens.
Georgia lost not one, but two players that decided to transfer from the program as graduates. One was defensive back, Reggie Wilkerson, and the other was Camden County’s own, quarterback Brice Ramsey.
SEC Tournament Preview
TheSouthernSportsEdition.com news services
One of the most anticipated weekends of the college basketball season has arrived, and that is the conference tournament weekend.
The stakes are high for everyone as every conference’s automatic national tournament bid is on the line. So, a team can have a poor regular season, get hot for one weekend, and will be invited to the Big Dance.
Locally, most eyes will be on the Southeastern Conference tournament being played in Nashville. Let’s take a look at who are the favorites to cut down the nets, who may be a dark horse, and who has no chance to win the tourney.
SEC basketball practically starts and ends with the Kentucky Wildcats. Kentucky has 47 conference titles; for comparison’s sake combine the next eight teams to have won the most conference titles and the total is…are you ready? 47.
Coach Calipari appears to have this year’s crop of freshmen peaking at the right time. The Cats are led by shooting guard Malik Monk and big man Bam Adebayo. However, keep an eye on sophomore Isaiah Briscoe, Briscoe seems to be the glue that keep the team together and focused on the floor.
If there is a team that can take down the Wildcats, it very well could be the Florida Gators. The Gators have had a bit of a resurgence under second year coach Mike White.
Coach White has maximized his roster, and gotten strong seasons from KeVaughn Allen and Charleston graduate transfer Canyon Barry, son of former NBA Hall of Famer Rick Barry.
What may hurt Florida will be the loss of John Egbunu to injury. The Gators have had a dozen or so games to adjust to life without the big man, and may be the only team with enough firepower to knock off the Cats.
Surprisingly, the Vanderbilt Commodores are in the category of favorites heading into conference tournament play. The ‘Dores’ record is not stellar, but it is the strength of schedule that is virtually assuring them of a national tournament invite.
Vandy, under first year head coach, Bryce Drew, has really hit their stride, winning five of their last six. Led by sharp shooting big man, Luke Kornet, look for Vanderbilt to have the second most fan support given that they are playing in their home city of Nashville, but no school will be represented more than Kentucky.
Looking to play spoiler this weekend will be the Georgia Bulldogs, Georgia coach Mark Fox had multiple reports that Georgia was inquiring with other coaches about their interest in the basketball job in Athens.
Apparently, the reports were erroneous or at least premature, as the UGA Athletic Director Greg McGarity quickly dispelled any rumors.
On the court, the Bulldogs will be getting one of the best big men in the conference back from injury in Yante Maten. If JJ Frazier can continue his hot play, and Maten can provide scoring down low, the Dawgs may be able to play their way back into the national tournament.
Teams that don’t have much of a chance this weekend, despite solid records, Arkansas and South Carolina.
First, Arkansas, the Razorbacks have a shiny record of 23-8, but it is fool’s gold. The Hogs best win is over Mount Saint Marys; a really good team but not elite.
South Carolina, under Frank Martin are following an eerily similar pattern to last season. The Gamecocks have started out looking like a lock, but just completely fall apart down the stretch.
The Cocks are a really scrappy bunch, play tough defense, and even have likely conference player of the year in Sindarius Thornwell, but it won’t be enough to bring home the SEC title.
When it is all said and done, look for the Kentucky Wildcats to bring yet another trophy home to the Blue Grass state. It’s just what they do.
