Let me start by saying I picked North Carolina to cut down the nets this past Monday night and I have the SSE article from a couple of weeks ago to prove it.
I have been mulling this article over on my mind for a few weeks now. Folks that know me know that I am a die-hard SEC supporter and I make no bones about it.
So, take notice when I type this this next sentence. The ACC is better right now than the SEC. Yes, I said it. Now that I have that out of the way here is why.
Georgia Bulldogs Offense Preview

As G-Day rolls around once again for the Georgia Bulldogs what will unfold for the Georgia Bulldogs in 2017.
93,000 showed up excited for the spring game last year, and despite that excitement the Dawg struggled at times and finished with an 8-5 record after dropping home games to Vandy, Tennessee, and GT.
The 2016 Dawgs did not know how to finish teams off. The defense played well enough to win 10 games last year but the offense struggled moving the ball in key moments against the Florida’s of the world and mental mistakes like a late interception against Georgia Tech that set up a winning drive for the Jackets.
Fast forward to year two in the Kirby regime and things look a lot better after Smart hauled in the highest ranked recruiting class in a long time in the Classic City.
North Carolina To Win NCAA Tourney

It is that special time of the year again. It is March Madness, and my buddies are going to think I have gone quite mad because I am picking North Carolina to win the National Championship. Folks who know me well know I don’t care much for Carolina Basketball and never much have.
Jacksonville Jaguars Draft

Yes, I’m the guy that picked the Jacksonville Jaguars to in the AFC South last year.
I bought into the hype surrounding the Jags as they dove deep into the 2016 Free Agent pool and spend a lot of money but did not get a lot of return.
I don’t think defense is the problem in Jacksonville, as you read rumors that the Jags may go after some high profile Free Safeties in this year’s free agent pool to sure up the back of that defense. Myles Jack has Pro Bowl written all over him and I read where Jacksonville will make him an every down LB.
When you look at what is holding Jacksonville down; then look no further than the offense. Critics put the blame on the shoulders of Blake Bortles, but for Bortles to develop into a next level QB he needs OL help. The Jags OL needs some major upgrades.
Bortles is always one of the most sacked QB’s in the NFL and a QB cannot continue to take those kind of shots weekly.
We are going to focus on a major problem for Jacksonville and that is running back. The Jaguar running game is pathetic ranking 22nd or higher in the NFL for the last five years. You cannot win in the NFL consistently without a running game, and this is where the culture shift must start in Jacksonville.
Look no further than the transformation of the Dallas Cowboys in 2016 and that started when the Cowboys selected Ezekiel Elliott with the fourth pick and Elliott was the best RB who led the league with 1,631 rushing yards.
Jacksonville holds the #4 pick and they need to select one of the top two backs on the board. The two best backs in the draft are Leonard Fournette and Dalvin Cook.
Fournette was a 235 pound monster at LSU and has a blend of power and speed that many in the SEC have not seen since Herschel and Bo. Fournette only played 3 years at LSU and rushed for 3800 yards and had his last season cut short by injuries.
The SEC is the major talent pipeline to the NFL right now and Fournette would be ready immediately to step in day one and be the Jags number one back. He can catch the ball out the backfield as well.
TJ Yeldon could then be converted to a third down option which he is best suited for. Fournette is a work horse and needs 20-25 carries a game. A good running game will take a huge load off of Bortles.
Dalvin Cook is the best RB to ever play at FSU. Cook has better numbers in college than Fournette and was more durable. Cook has 4500 rushing yards at FSU in 3 seasons and 46 TD’s and he carried the ball almost 700 times in Tallahassee and seemed to get better deeper in games.
Cook plays at 210 pounds and is an excellent receiving option out of the back field. The ACC was the best conference in college football last year. Cook did not get the press he deserved, but this guy is a beast and has home run speed.
The Jags must take one of these studs with the 4th pick. Jacksonville has to get better fast in the running game and you have to have the horses to accomplish this.
If the Jaguars pass on either Fournette or Cook then how do you get better on offense in 2017?
Letter To Ole Miss Fan

My oldest daughter Alexia is an avid Ole Miss fan. I dedicate this article to my loving daughter. The NCAA released a list of new allegations alleged committed by Ole Miss. Here is the bulleted list:
A prospective student-athlete went hunting near campus on private land owned by a booster during his official visit in 2013 and on two or three occasions after he enrolled, and that the access to this land was arranged by the football program.
- A former staff member impermissibly arranged lodging and transportation for a prospective student-athlete and his companions while providing impermissible transportation to another prospective student-athlete. The total value is alleged to be $2,272. The football program has also been alleged of giving $235 in free meals to a prospective student-athlete.
- Former staff member violated the NCAA principles of ethical conduct when committing violations and when providing false information to the institution and enforcement staff.
- Former staff member initiated and facilitated two boosters that gave impermissible cash payments to a prospective student-athlete of anywhere between $13,000 to $15,600.
- Former staff member arranged for a friend of a prospective student-athlete’s family to get impermissible merchandise, valued at approximately $2,800. The school will contest.
- Head coach Hugh Freeze had impermissible, in-person, off-campus contact with a prospective student-athlete.
- A booster provided money, food and drinks to a prospective student-athlete at a value between $200 and $600. The school will contest.
- Head coach Hugh Freeze violated head coach responsibility legislation. The school will contest
- The school lacked institutional control and failed to monitor the conduct and administration of its athletics program. The school will contest.
In response to these allegations Ole Miss imposed the following penalties on itself:
Ole Miss has self-imposed a one-year ban from the postseason and will forfeit its share of the SEC postseason football revenue for this upcoming year, which is expected to be somewhere in the range of $7-8 million.
Who did not see this dumpster fire coming in Oxford? When the dreaded lack of institutional control charge is thrown out there then usually more sanctions are coming.
Does Ole Miss really think the NCAA is going to accept these self-imposed sanctions and just turn the other cheek? I can see loss of scholarships on the horizon. And this one year bowl ban? I thought Ole Miss served that last year? My bad they went 5-7.
Flashback to September 24th, 2016. My oldest daughter and her friend Caroline take an SEC road trip to Oxford for the Georgia game. Dad is having his best day of 2016 on River Street in Savannah watching the game in a local tavern and the texts start coming from oldest daughter when Ole Miss starts blowing out my Dawgs.
Dad knew UGA was in trouble that day, and I did make the comment that sanctions were coming and you better enjoy this while you can.
I knew Ole Miss was on borrowed time back in September so what did I do, I shook it off and shopped in a store my oldest daughter loves and sat and enjoyed a lovely day in the oak filled squares in downtown Savannah and did not buy her a single thing.
The NCAA is about to rent every available office in Oxford, Mississippi to investigate the Ole Miss Football program. Welcome back to the status you have grown accustomed to since Johnny Vaught retired Rebel fans and that is the status of a bottom feeder.
Did I mention how much I love River Street and Downtown Savannah? The ride home on 95 South that day was magical. I was still getting scoreboard shot texts from first born child.
What does Hotty Toddy mean anyway? Does it mean NCAA probation?
As for you oldest Ole Miss fan daughter, I think I’ll take your baby sister shopping this weekend. She loves the Georgia Bulldogs, and you love NCAA sanctions. Have a great day!

Pender’s Promises

Earlier in the month new Brunswick High Football coach Sean Pender spoke to a packed house of Pirate supporters at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Glynn.
It was a meet and greet event where Pender got to meet the Pirate fan base for the first time since his hiring.
Georgia Sports Heart Break

I had a business associate call me from San Diego this week offering his condolences on the epic fourth quarter meltdown of the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl 51.
He asked me what happened, and I said you would have to live in Georgia and follow college and pro sports in this state to understand.
Natives could see this entire thing unfolding right before our eyes, and yet we knew it was coming and felt powerless because that is how we have been conditioned living in this state and following Georgia based sports teams.
Here are the numerous examples of classic Atlanta choke jobs:
January 4th, 1981: The 12-4 Atlanta Falcons led the Dallas Cowboys 27-17 with 6:37 left to play in the NFC Playoffs. The Cowboys rally and beat the Falcons 30-27. The 1980 Falcons were a good enough team to win the Super Bowl. The loss to the Cowboys killed momentum for the franchise as they only had one more winning season the rest of the 1980’s. It had to come from the hated Dallas Cowboys.
1982 Atlanta Braves: The 82 Braves started the season with 13 straight wins and in late July had a 9 game division lead over the Dodgers. Then the Braves proceeded to lose 19 of the next 21 games and backed into the playoffs after losing to the Padres on the final day of the season as Joe Morgan hit a homerun to lift the Giants over the Dodgers to give the Braves the NL West title. The Braves then proceeded to get swept by the Cardinals in the NL championship series. Do you see a trend starting to develop?
1996 Atlanta Braves: Up 2-0 in the World Series against the Yankees after winning first two games in Yankee Stadium. The Braves drop 4 straight to choke in classic Atlanta fashion. I am not even going to mention Mark Wohlers. Just throw a dang fastball.
1998 Atlanta Braves: This team won 106 games and go up 2-0 on the Padres in the NL Championship series and then lose 4 straight. The 97, 99, 02, and 03 Braves all won 100 games and choked in the playoffs.
2015 Atlanta Hawks: The Hawks won 60 games and were the top seed in the Eastern Conference. Get to the Eastern Conference Finals and get swept 4-0 by the Cavs. Hawks had some good teams in the 80’s that folded like a dove in a cornfield on a Saturday hunt.
Super Bowl 51: The one we’ll never forget. Beat the crap out of Seattle and Green Bay and roll into the Super Bowl clicking on all cylinders and for 43 minutes beat the absolute crap out of the New England Patriots. Leading 28-3 the wheels completely fall off. The 25-point lead evaporates and the Falcons lose in overtime on the biggest sports stage ever, and now will it will be remembered as the biggest meltdown in sports history.
If you are a follower of any major sport in the state of Georgia you know disappointment well. Dawg fans you know disappointment as The University of Florida owns you in all three major men’s sports Football, Baseball, and Basketball.
Atlanta pro sports has only one World Title the 1995 Braves, and decades of heartbreak.
I’ll leave you with this a long time avid Atlanta pro sports fan told me this joke on Tuesday. When I die I want 2 Falcons, 2 Braves, and 2 Hawks fans to be my pallbearers so they can let me down one last time.
Cheer up the Braves are about to report to Spring Training. I know that brings comfort Atlanta sports fans.
Pirates Signing Day

Coming off of a disappointing 5-5 last place region finish, the Brunswick High Pirates had 7 players sign Letter of Intents to further their education and football careers.
D’Ante Demery- University of Georgia: The 4-star recruit signed with the UGA’s top 5 class. The 320-pound offensive tackle is part of the best OL group ever assembled in UGA recruiting circles and whether Demery gets on the field as a freshman will be determined. This kid has a chance to be in the NFL in 3-4 years.
Shawn Smith- University of Virginia: Great pickup by UVA. Smith is fast and a great athlete and could be a good WR at the college level. I think Smith is a pretty good DB and could land there. Virginia has a great athlete in their program. Smith might possibly return some kicks as well. He will bulk up quickly in a college strength and conditioning program.
Danijah Gammage- Mercer University: Mercer got a great football player. Gammage is a hitter and has great ball skills. I think Gammage has the potential to develop into an NFL caliber player while he is in college. He reminds me a lot of Tracy Walker coming out of BHS. He will get bigger and stronger in Macon.
Deqwan Chapman- Albany State University: Chapman was a solid corner for BHS now he heads to a solid college football program and I think he will end up being at ASU. Good kid and a good player.
Wiley Golden- Tusculum College: Golden will take his talents to the prestigious private college in Greeneville, Tennessee. Golden is an excellent student and has great hands at the TE position. Golden’s academic accomplishments are stellar and he is a pretty good football player on top of it. I’m very proud of this young man.
Jabori Williams- Hutchinson Community College: You can’t teach size and at 6’4 330 pounds Williams is huge. I expect him to contribute right away and bigger things will happen for this young man in a couple of years. He is just learning how to play OL.
Brandon McMaster- University of Georgia (Preferred Walk-On): What if this young man did not battle injuries his entire senior year? He goes to UGA as a PWO because this kid has a 3.5 GPA and has already graduated and is the example of opportunities that come around to folks who get it done in the classroom. This kid is a great football player and it would no surprise me one bit if he does not end contributing in Athens. UGA got a steal here.
BHS has talent and has kids that get it done in the classroom. The future is bright for the Pirates as they could sign 10 or more players next February with the huge senior class returning.
But for the seven that signed on signing day, as a Pirate alum I just want to thank you for all of the blood, sweat, and tears you shed to lay the foundation for future Pirates. Thank you and as always Pirate Pride!
College Football Playoff Predictions

It is time again for the college football playoff and this year’s games I think will be pretty good.
Let’s start with the teams.
1. Alabama: The Crimson Tide are in my opinion are a professional team playing at the college level. I really think the Tide could give The Cleveland Browns all they could handle. Jalen Hurts is an amazing dual threat QB. I can’t believe it took Nick Saban most of fall camp to name him the starter for 2016. Saban is the best coach in football and Alabama is the favorite to win the playoff.
2. Ohio State: The Buckeyes led by Urban Meyer have been a dynasty for years now. They won a classic against Michigan to get into the playoff. The loss to Penn State cost Ohio State a shot at the Big 10 Championship, but the committee put them in despite that. It is all about money folks. OSU produces mega bucks and TV Ratings.
3. Clemson: The Tigers are back for the second year in a row with a QB that should have won the Heisman. This offense can put up yards and points like a pinball machine. Can Clemson muster up enough defense to win it all this year?
4. Washington: The Huskies lead by QB Jake Browning have been very impressive this year. I like this team and think they deserve to be here. We on the east coast will be shocked when we see how good these Huskies are.
Predictions:
Alabama vs Washington in The Peach Bowl in Atlanta.
Washington will fly across country to meet the Tide in Atlanta; a place Alabama has spent a lot of time in over the past decade. Alabama has a monster defense with first round picks everywhere, and Washington has a really good offense that can put up points. The difference in this game will be Jalen Hurts and the Tide offense. The Huskies will test Alabama but in the end Alabama rolls 35-24. Bama has too many weapons.
Ohio State vs Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Arizona. Both fan bases have travel a good distance to get here. I am actually looking forward to watching this game.
Ohio State averages 480 yards (21st-best in FBS) and 42.7 points (ninth-best in FBS) per game. Clemson averages 506 yards (13th-best in FBS) and 40.2 points (15th-best in FBS) per game. The Tigers’ specialty is the passing game (332.6 yards per game) while the Buckeyes are better at running the ball (258.3 yards per game).
On defense, Ohio State is fifth in the country, allowing opponents just 282 yards per game to go with just 14.2 points per game (third in FBS). Clemson finished ninth in the FBS in yards allowed (314 per game) and 12th in points allowed per game (18.4)
When it is all said and done I would take Deshaun Watson over any player in the country and think Clemson is a team of destiny. I did pick this team to win it all in the preseason and I think the Tigers get past Ohio State 38-28.
This will set up a huge rematch with Alabama.
